Acura RSX - Rally New York
Pics from this past weekend's all tarmac (paved) rally in New York. Some hairpins and tight junctions, and lots of very fast sections over some nasty crests and jumps, roads were cracked, wet, dirty and foggy at times... ie. foockin fun lads :nice:
For now its just pics but vids will come soon.
Regards.

PLEASE, you guys are comparing a rally car sponsored by FORD / WRC with one put together by FerreiraCompetitions? LOL! Save the A/C forum talk.
You know what it costs to road race? Yeah, double, triple, quadruple that for rallying.
Ofcourse those heavily sponsored cars are going to be pretty.

Rally cars arent really as low as the Focus there looks to be, note that the suspension is compressed on the side that you're looking at. If a rally car was that low it would scrape everywhere and would have no suspension travel for jumps or cutting ditches/corners. Here's a Tarmac spec WRC car, not that low huh? Link My setup is at about the stock ride hight for tarmac and slightly higher for gravel.
I run in a Production class so performance modifications are not allowed except for exaust and suspension.
As far as suspension goes, I have custom made strut tubes with 50mm Bilstein inverted inserts custom valved for the weight of the car. 275lbs front, rear's are Biltein as well with 300lbs coils. The springs are softer than stock but the shocks are pretty firm, what it does is it provides better grip in corners and doesnt slide all over the place. Swaybars are stock for tarmac and no swaybars at all for gravel.
Front struts
The safety: Full rally cage, FIA seats, FIA belts, fire ext, etc... Oh and the lights are only attached for the night stages.
Ohh and the hand brake is only used on tight hairpins, the rest is just a regular slides initiated by pendulum and left foot braking.

I was wondering about the body roll too, especially the rear compression. Is that normal? This pic is the one that seemed to exaggerate it most:

Edit: Those shock pistons are huge! Very interesting to see the comparison to roadracing cars there.

Guys...this is a front strut-based RSX we're talking about here. The RSX is not known for a lot of suspension travel, so height must be kept near-stock for a rally environment.
Also, most shock pistons are huge on performance-based strut setups.

wow, I didn't even notice that. That does seem a bit extreme back there.
I guess those slippery tarmac conditions it's better to have more flex than slide.

When it comes to loose surface conditions (gravel, mud, snow or rain), mechanical grip is the name of the game and one of the best ways to get it is to run little or no sway bars.
You do give up body roll.
Anti-sway bars (among other things) help with balance at the expense of overall grip.
That shot is probably worse case scenario, hard corner after a large dip.
