Trunk key
Since about 30 000km our trunk lock has worked intermittently. Several complaints to the dealer resulted in them lubricating it but the problem never went away. In frustration we just started relying on the release by the driver's door.
We complained again but now that we are over warranty, they want $150 to replace it with a tumbler that will match our current key. $100 to take apart the current mechanism and see if they can clean and fix it.
I'm no mechanic but I can take things apart and put them back the way they were. Any suggestions or warnings about pitfalls are welcome. If anything, I figure showing up with the tumbler already removed should reduce my cost so what do I have to lose by taking it out myself and trying to clean it?

what year civic do u have ??? i have a 07 coupe and it does not have a key hole at all on the trunk .... my key itself has a trunk release on it and i have a release by on the driver side floor... is your car a sedan??? good luck
Well that sounds about right... we charge 2.5 hours to re-key a car as they call it. The tumbler does not come set to your key, it takes time to make it work with your current key. Remember time (labor) is the majority of most repairs done. As far as what you risk by doing it yourself... you risk any part you have to take off... lose it, break it, distort it...whatever. Find out that if you give them 100 to take apart and clean and it doesnt work, does the 100 you gave em already go towards the new tumbler? or are you out of pocket 250 now?

If you have all your receipts from taking it to the dealer for repair, call Honda USA Customer Service and complain that they NEVER fixed the release properly. Tell then that only AFTER the warranty expired did they tell you, you needed an expensive repair.
I had this problem with Toyota. I had a power window that only worked 1/2 the time. I took it in 4 times over the course of a year for the window. Twice they told me they could not "replicate" the problem and did nothing. Twice they told me it was a loose connection and was repaired. When I took it back the 5th time for the window, 5K miles out of warranty, they told me a needed a New motor and switch, $300.00 in parts plus labor. I torn into the service manager (which gained me nothing), and filed a complain with the head office. It took a couple months but the dealer finally replaced it properly and eat the cost of the repair.
Just a suggestion.

It would be nice to have a trunk release. We really couldn't believe it that there wasn't one on the 2006.
The tumbler with a new key is $38 at the dealer. It looks like about 6 minutes of work to take off the old one and put in a new one, so I can see how they justify $60 in labour... or not.
I'm going to take it apart and clean it up and see where it takes me. Nothing to lose.
