Default lower offset~~>wider stance

so i think im finding that the lower the offset is(+40 bieng lower than +43) the more it brings the wheel out of the wheel well.. making the car appear to have a wider stance?? im guessing this probably isnt mechanically correct but true...??

So yes, you're right. But it starts getting impractical and rubbing... which is why those 'hardcore JDM' low offset wheels might look cool but it's for hard parking only.

heres some pix of my setup...i kno its an EM2 but i have the 5 lug conversion form the ep3 maybe this will give you a better visual.
i have work ewing III 16x8 et6 fronts and 16x8.5 et10 rears 205/40/16 falken 512 tires. 06 typeS sway bar f/r progress coils custom dampen/spring height/rate. i recently purchased pillow top mounts and rear tie bars and control arms for a pretty stout setup.

its does widen the stance out and with it as low as i am with all the suspension work i have it realy makes a difference.

nah no wider tires...its call tire stretch.

its big on euro rides and over the pond. im utilizing it for the simple fact that JDM is played to the max for all the wrong reasons (ebay lol). and there is no coupes for 01-05 in japan only UK.

i wanted to have a euro-ish theme to the ride so i went with a lil tire stretch and wheel poke. anyone whose been on any type of VW forum will have seen this look b4.

Oh.... Well in that case, I still think it looks a bit weird but if it is there on purpose...

I always see the ricers here rocking that... probably because they buy cheap 17s and 18s and can't afford the wide tire for them?

MAD DRIFT YO!

Wide wheels/stretched tires is definitely a euro VW/German car trend. Actually, they've been doing it since 2000ish with some regularity. I've maybe seen it on some old school Japanese cars, but not too many. Japanese seem to be more about narrow wheels in this country because we have companies like Rota that make a ton of 15x6.5" and 17x7" wheels.

Just be careful...some tires can handle being stretched like that and some can't. If you get any weird handling sensations, that's probably the reason.

And yeah, I bet your tire guy hated you.

They mounted mine like that on my daily wheels, pretty easily.

Todd00, you mean like this.

well thanks for all the input.... just want my wheels to not stick out past the fender but not tuck either... kinda want them flush with my fenders with a semi-stiff suspension to prevent rubbing..i have some tein basics that i have to put on; debating weather or not i should look into getting some custom springrates.. thanks again!

NO, any set of decent coilovers should suffice. the only time I've rubbed on my N+ (all the way down in the front) was on a tight radius 180* turn.

Stretched tires are all good until the bead breaks. Kinda like wearing underwear that's too tight until your ********* fall off. FTL!

Stretched tires are the new rice. Same as having a Civic with a big silver wing. Totally non functional.

Pretty much the ugliest wheel/tire combo I've ever seen. At first glance I thought they weren't even seated...

actually people have been doin it for plenty of years so theres nuthin new about it...what do you really know about tire stretch beside ur opinion? in moderation its not bad. the extreme example posted before this one IS rediculous and probably ( i would hope) a joke. they are safe as long as you follow the guidelines...monitor tire pressure ( i do so weekly) and note caster, camber, toe and tread wear.

theres nuthin unsafe about a little bit of stretch. we jus had this debate over in 01-05 civic. its preference, i chose to utilize tire stretch because we have no coupe in japan so people cant go crazy with the "JDM" ****. tire stretch is big across the pond and there is a UK spec coupe for my year. i wanted to stay a little truer to roots so i took a euro approach.

Do you even know why people started stretching?

More air pressure than it's suppose to have. Trying to extend the life and driving it until it's bald and the bands start to poke through. Stretching it wider than it was meant to go. It becomes LESS safe. I'm not sure what ignorant world you live in where that is completley safe. You're information is false.

your clearly very angry..and an ***.. these wheels are done with a give and take theory..they are goin a little wider so u lower the max pressure so they arent bustin at the seams. im dont "debating" with you cuz u clearly have no intentions of even giving anything besides the norm a chance..u kno everything im wrong ur right im sorry...consider my wheels sold and the tires incinerated by the time you read this..bullshit lol ur a real wordsworth btw

Common sense > Reading. I don't have to read to know that a tire that's too small being stretched to fit a rim that's wider is not going to be as safe (if safe at all) as a tire meant for that rim.

It was started and popularized in the drifting community a while ago to make the breakaway of traction much more predicable and controllable, with less tire rollover. The VW guys do it solely for looks....
