My friend just bought a prelude and we need help
Okay,
A buddy of mine just bought a 93 prelude si.
It has:
obx header
full exhaust
f22b motor
light flywheel
strut bars
aem intake
stage 2 clutch
coilovers.
the kid he bought it off of claims the motor has 56k on it.
The power steering was not hooked up (belt was off).
Okay now here's the problems we've had or noticed.
*Check engine light will come on after car runs for a min and will stay on and then randomly shut off. It wont be on whenever car is started.
anyone have any ideas?
*We pulled the plugs to put some ngk's in and noticed the cars running lean
any help there?
*whenever you lug the car down and dont rip it, the car seems to have a spudder like it loads up.
car makes the honda "bee" sound how do we get rid of that?
*3rd gear is hard to find sometimes.
*and car will idle high and between shifts it revs high

sounds like you guys need a full major tune up.
Stage 2 clutch on that car seems a bit exsessive.
Pull your codes and tell us what they are.

Yes, you can pull the codes. Do that and post up what the codes are for.

Valve adjustment, change all filters, change all fluids, change all belts, check all vaccum lines for leaks. Change all nasty looking hoses.
If you throw a CEL its stored in your ECU until the ECU is reset.
WHat year is your car and motor?

you can pull codes, itll will show codes for any cel that has ever occured after the ecu was last reset (whether it be a dead battery or resetting it by pulling a fuse).
search on how to pull a code. u basically jump a blue plug behind the dash under a radio with a wire or paper clip, and then turn the ign on without starting the car... then count the blinks.
theres detailed instructions on any prelude forum that exists. the process has been covered a million times.

wheres the plug for the scan tool?
we looked last night and couldnt find it.
thanks so much</TD></TR></TABLE>
Dude, you do not need a scan tool. Someone has already told you how to check the codes using a paper clip.
Find the 2-PIN BLUE CONNECTOR behind the radio and connect the two sides with the paper clip.

F22b was swapped into the prelude I take it. Just making sure the guy who sold it to your friend said something about it. Good luck.

Code 23 = knock sensor
Code 43 = fuel supply system
I don't think F22Bs have a knock sensor, so your ECU is probably looking for something that's not there (if you have the H23 ECU still, H23 does have a knock sensor).
Not sure about the fuel supply code, check for any leaks or damaged electrical connectors, and you might also try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds to clear the codes and then see if they come back.

we cleared the codes and they both came back. I'm almost 100% positive its the h22 ecu so that knock sensor isnt a big deal. But like i said before in the post...
1) Has a spudder when lugged down @ like 2200rpm-3100pm, but only happens on occ. so I'm thinking its a fuel pump maybe. Theres 157xxx on the chassis and i bet its never been changed.
2) makes that honda buzz noise
is that a heat sheild or something?

Yeah, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fuel pump. I honestly can't think of what sensor/s would cause the fuel supply system to code to show up...
Buzz like from the exhaust note or like a metal-grinding noise? There's a bracket that holds the header to the back of engine block on the bottom that tends to crack or break and cause some nice metal noises. Then there are heat shields all the way down the exhaust like you said...

Okay Im not sure what size injectors are on a F22B but that ECu thinks that they are 345cc. If they are the size of H23 injectors which are 240cc, than odds are its not delivering enough fuel, and causing a fuel sensors code.

F22b, is a DOHC motor vtec correct. Similar to h22a.
Injectors should be the same.</TD></TR></TABLE>
The DOHC F22B is almost identical to an H23 DOHC non-VTEC (not H22), pretty far from an H22 except for it's displacement.
There is an F20 DOHC VTEC that looks just like an H22.

Anyway^^^^^^^^^ u guys are trippin. Its an f20b that is similar to an h22,and if the engine in your car is an f22b,it will run fine with h23 injectors....but I would start with a new fuel filter 1st,and some injector cleaner(15$-20$),i use the chevron w techron and it seems to work good, before investing in a fuel pump(70-100$).
Also like said before go over all basics, and do all of the prevenative maintanance that u can, like replace all fluids(even tranny),check all vacum lines and belts for integrity and proper function....then reset the ecu ,and see what codes u can pull.
And as far as the 3rd gear being hard to find, its pretty common for the tranny synchros to fail in 4th gens, but not necesarrily the case, alot of people report different gears in their ludes being"troblesome" at times, but just take a little manuvering and are just fine.
Good luck

My bad. I must of got it confused. I searched after posting and found a F22b for sale and it said DOHC vtec on the cover. I guess that was wrong.
So then the OP now has Injectors over 100ccs bigger.
OP if your intrested I have an extra set of H23 injectors fulley functional for sale. PM if you want them. 80 bucks shipped

Okay... Heres an update:
Did the injector cleaner last tank..
took the car on a trip to ohio today, Has really bad spudders @ 3k in 5th gear.
He ordered some better wires
and replaced the gas cap.
I think we're going to do the fuel filter tommrow. anyone have an exact location on it?
I'll keep you posted.
btw
Cars 93 prelude si.
f22b
stock ecu.
thanks and any other ideas will help

It's on the firewall to the left of the throttle body and down a bit...really easy to get to.

U might as well get a new cap and rotar for your distributor if it is sputtering, and just having trouble running in general.U can pick them up at the dealership fairly cheap(well at least 4 the dealership),and replace when you do the wires.
