Default head swap , now blue smoke ..... searched !!!

ok i have a d16z6 .... i got a built head with crower springs/retainers and a stage 2 turbo cam, with unkown valves they arent stock i know that for sure . the head had been hottanked before it was built and had VERY low miles on it. i put it on my stock block now it smokes blue when vtec engages and under deceleration. sounds just like valve stem seals except for it dosnt smoke nearly as bad when declerating compared to when vtec hits ... its not my rings they are perfectly fine , my pcv system is working perfect . now besides the valve stem seals witch i plan on replacing soon what else could it be ??? my dads says maybe the head is cracked but there are no sysmptoms of a cracked head besides it smoking ... im out of ideas if i replace the seals and nothing changes ....

have you done a compression check? with and without a little oil in the cylinders?

cant really be your headgasket because you would have coolant issues as well.

If its not your rings, its gotta be the seals.

Doesn't smoke on start up, seals should be fine.

Guides? but the oil would have to get past the seals...

Fine and automotive machine shop in your area and ask them...

ok so today i pulled the valve cover of , and got to work replacing the seals..... turns out they mixed matched a couple of the seals ( exhuast on the intake side and vise versa) and alll the mixed matched ones had oil under the seals.... so theres the problem right there , or so i hope ... i havnt started it yet im waiting over night for some silicone i used for the valve cover to dry ....but lets hope all my problems are fixed

if they used the wrong seals, chances are the seals the mix matched need to be replaced entirely, but gl.

ok the more and more people i talk to it sounds like the the valve guides are worn beyond there limits ..... i meen the wiggled around a little bit but nothing crazy and the worst ones were exhuast.... plus would they still leak oil ieven if they were worn with new seals?? and also the car that the head came off of never smoked but it was a built low comp turbo d16 .... would the low comp cause it to not leak ?? im getting ready to head to pick n pull and try and find a head with good valve guides .......

If the guides are worn it will leak because the valves can move and distort the seals a bit to allow oil to leak past. Probably why it won't leak after it sits. I'm not 100% that's your problem though. But, I wouldn't use used valve guides. Buy new ones, unless you're looking for a whole new head and are just going to swap your parts onto it.

It's hard to tell you what to do. I hate for you to just be throwing money at it like with the seals, but if the valve moved in a little bit that too much. There isn't barely any play in there, or at least there shouldn't be.

valve guides are speced to the ten thousandth of an inch, so if you can feel the valve move, something isnt right.

yea i just talk to my dads friend that works on imports all damn day and he was saying that they shouldnt even barely move and showed me what some good guides felt like .... luckily at my pick n pull there was a jdm d15b that was FRESH ! the head was rebuilt and there was not a spec of gold discoloring ANYWERE on it hell the whole motor was crazy clean , the pistons werent even black yet ... it has fresh valves, guides , seals and cam . so im just going to put my crower cam and springs in that head and be done with it , plus it will lower my compression from the y8 thats on there now ..... so far its looking good im only out $30 for the seals thanks for all the help guys next weekend ill be swapping heads , wish me luck

Good luck man. let us know if that solves your problem? Did this friend say that he thought that the sloppy guides could be causing the smoking issue?

yea he said that WAS the problem and it didnt show on the other motor so bad because it was a low comp motor , so there was less compression and less vaccum ... yea i got the d15b head for $32 !!!! and i have all the gaskets laying around from kits ive ordered and not used peices from them ... so its all good

ok i put the crower springs and cam in the d15b head and guess what .......IT STILL SMOKES !!!! the guides are good on this head and it has 1000000X's less miles then all the heads that have been on my car so far ... i completely removed the pcv system from any vaccum source , running everything free air still smokes .... WTF IS GOING ON !!! its not my rings it would smokes all the time not only that when i pulled the y8 head off the intake valves and inside the intake manifold were oily .... WERE ELSE CAN OIL BE COMING FROM !!!

Do a compression test. and record all the numbers. Then go add a little bit of oil in each cylinder and redo the compression tests. If the compression reading increase then your rings are bad. This would be my next step

rings are not bad ........ all cyclinders 185 -/+ 1 psi oil nothing changed , how would oil come from the cyclinder and go up into the intake manifold .... im no scientist but i think that is impossible the problem is above the cylinders for sure ...
