I've searched...PCV valve and oil burning?

I tried searching but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I've heard that a clogged PCV valve will create enough positive pressure to force oil around the oil rings (this is on a GSR too btw) and cause it to burn insane amounts of oil. So I just went ahead and replaced it, I was like ah what the heck, it doesn't cost that much... So I took the old one out and shook it, and I could barely hear anything rattling around inside of the valve, and the inside appeared to be caked with deposits. The new one rattled much more freely, but I'm still curious:
Does anyone know exactly to what extent replacing a PCV valve will help with my oil situation? I don't drive my car that much because it's at home and I'm in college, so I'm kinda anxious to find out! Furthermore, is there anything else I should check, like the oil separator or any of the tubing for clogs?
I have good compression on my engine, and everything, but I was burning about a quart every 800 miles, and I don't drive my car nearly as hard as most people do (I do a bit of spirited VTEC use from time to time
) That is super excessive on the oil though, still.
Thanks!
