I was looking at my engine and noticed this black powderey stuff. The reason it's missing a little bit is because I rubbed my finger in it to get a smell.

It's coming out of the crack / seal. But, what part is that? ..and why after only 48k on the engine :confused:

If I'm not mistaken - that's an AUTOMATIC transmission.

Dude, if that's the Automatic tranny leaking, you gots BIG TIME TROUBLE. Somehow, someway, that might be benign. Look VERY CAREFULLY at the right axle where it goes into the tranny. If you got some stuff off the road on the axle, it MIGHT have thrown it up onto the case, but if that crap is from INSIDE the transmission...I'm sorry.
