i know that is pretty long, so my question is...
how common is solvent pop? PPG paint system, supposedly a good shop, etc...
cliffs-
new japanese mazda in silver metallic, due to touch up faux pas, roof required blend and total re-clear, while marks/blotches/stripes, etc showed up under clear, and now marks are gone but what's left are little tiny baby bubbles tightly grouped under the clear. will be redone by shop, but i fear if this can be shaken totally.

Solvent popping is something that does happen at lean production based shops. I wouldn't say its common in general but its one of the more common flaws along with die-back and loss of gloss, besides drips, sags ect. Most likely they didn't flash it long enough between coats and/or before the clear, and rushed the spray/bake phase. That and they might not be using the correct temp reducer to allow it to flash quicker. PPG also uses a 1 to 1 base mix which is one of the reasons why I prefer BASF RM Diamont, thats quite a bit of solvent in the base mix. PPG is high quality paint, just my opinion.
Damn that sucks. I ran through the thread on your link and it sounds like the guy was in a hurry. In order to completely vanquish this puppy, he needs to pop out the roof gutters (which you already have replacements for) and block down and redo this whole thing.
If I were him, I'd block it down, perfect your roof line, then primer, base, base and clear. He needs to eat the cost of doing it flawlessly to save himself from small claims court. I would sue the guy to recoup your losses so you can have it done correctly elsewhere if necessary.
I'm a perfectionist as well and I can definitely sympathize with you on this one. Sorry your clear repair didn't work out but hopefully by the time this is all said and done, you'll have 10x the clear on your roof that she had from the factory. At least you know to be careful with your paint chip repairs in the future.
Yet another sad story to reinforce the fact that I'll never buy a brand new silver car...
Good luck bro.

thanks alot!
i do indeed intend to take this as far as possible to get my money back IF he can't satiate my expectations for this job. i just want it to be of factory quality aesthetically, meaning no defects. i know his guy has the potential to do nice work because has done several of my friend's race cars and also handled a few things here and there for the owners exotics, IE a crashed black gallardo. i am with you that he rushed this thing, because evidently he didn't start on it until late the day before i picked it up, and i picked it up in the morning of the next day! all that despite having essentially 4 days to handle it.
oh well, we will see this week how it turns out!

is it possible for them to do what they said, properly, w/o rushing: take it on tuesday morning and have it ready for wednesday pick-up? i assume wednesday afternoon.
If it's really a good shop, shouldn't be a problem at all, especially if its just a few panels. Hopefully they know exactly what they did wrong and that they know how to deal with doing re-do's on fresh paint.

well, i got the piece back on friday. it looked flawless. they handled the stock rearward waves well, deleting them all properly and they even managed to remove and reinstall my stock gutter moldings without issue (yay i get to take the ones i bought back!)
in an interesting twist...an old friend of mine called me and i was talking to him about this issue. i knew him to be a BASF rep, but he told me that he worked for PPG now as a factory rep, and actually serviced the center where i got my car done. he called down there when the car was being done and asked the owner how it's going. i'm sure the owner was very surprised to get that call ; )
anyway-
i found two VERY small pieces of junk toward the back on the edges, probably a piece of dust in each instance, but nothing even worth mentioning really- the factory paint could easily have something like that in it. i noticed all the spots that had the solvent pop look wonderful - if i look at a bright light via the areas, i can see a few of the baby baby needle head pops still, but they are miniscule half craters under the clear instead of bubbles if that makes sense. i assume they were sanded down and handled however they handled them, rebased, cleared, etc. i am probably the only one that could find them even if i told someone where they were, and how to find them! my scale modeling background and overall **** ways are responsible for the hunt that found them in the first place.
i am very pleased with the result, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! now i can go back to normal and enjoy having my car back.
