My Broken ITR Tranny
I am posting in the ITR forum because my tranny is from an IT and maybee some of you have had this problem.
Well, the other day I was driving home and hitting some corners hard. After I got out of one of the turns and shifted into 4th and then gave it some gas. The tranny started clicking and whining. The car drove fine but tranny mad alot of noises. Before any of this happened my tranny was sorta whistling, but not bad for some time now, I always thought it was a vacum line or something. But turns out it wasn’t. Well I pulled my tranny and cracked it open. 3 teeth on the countershaft were totally knocked off. One of the teeth was sticking to the magnet and the others floating around. Also one if the bearings on the lsd had a dent in it. Every time I spun the bearing it would have alot of resistance, and made a click, unlike the bearing on the other side that spun freely.
I am gonna order a new bearing for the lsd. I am also just gonna upgrade to a jdm 4.7 final drive seeing as how I have to replace the countershaft. I always wanted the jdm final, and now is a good time to get it, while my tranny is apart. I will also be getting a GSR 5th gear, because my car is a daily driver and I do a decent amount of highway driving.
I just have a few questions. What could have caused this? I only launched my car with this tranny 2 times at the track, and the trans has been on for roughly 2000 miles. When I bought the tranny it came out of a totaled ITR with 7k miles on it. The car was driven by a girl too.
One last thing, who has any JDM 4.7 Final Drive kits in Stock? And what else to I need to order to put in a GSR 5th gear. Just the gear for the countershaft and main shaft, right?
Here are some pics of what the tranny looked like.

Why is that stupid Honda ITR tranny so weak. I have heard many times of tranny problems. Can't Honda built strong trannys?
I have problems too with syncros the 2nd time. The first time was without any mods to the engine!

Somebody has been using slicks at the track. I doubt you have enought power to brake it on the street, unless the tranny was fugged when the car was hit.

One question. ... How many other production cars do you see trying to mesh gears at 9000 RPM?? That's probably a good place to start
. You don't see disel trucks have syncro problems often do you? heheheh

Does anyone know where I can get a bearing puller for the top bearing on the countershaft. Like the one in the helms. I have a gear puller but it doesnt look like it will work.
pull 5st gear and the bearing at the same time. Get a 3 prong puller from AutoZone
2 prong pullers suck the *** end of a donkey.

My trans did the exact samething. This was on a 97 Type R. 2 teeth on the coutershaft broke off like that and 2 teeth on the diff ring gear broke off also. I never drag raced the car. I first noticed the noise when I was getting off the freeway. I wasn't racing before that, just normal freeway driving.

AssPenny, I managed to get the gears off with my 2 prong. Is there a way to get them back on the new countershaft without using a press, which I dont have.
Also, who has and jdm final drive kits in stock????

We tried and tried with the 2 prong but it just would not come off. We were using the poll from the jack on the end of 1/2" breaker bar and it was just twisting the puller off the counter shaft. As for putting the gears on the new counter shaft, go to home depot and buy some 2" to 2.5" I.D. heavy walled pipe and just hammer the gears back on. That is all we did, and we did not have a press or vice.
Also, stick the new counter shaft in the freezer over night if you got time, makes the gears slide on

That how most people are, there is realy not alot to a manual tranny. Just take your time and as long as you got the helms you should be ok. When we did my tranny, almost all of us have never seen the inside of one before so we were picking up all the parts and looking at them. Next thing i know all the syncros and dog's are all over the place. Thank gawd for the helms at that point
Just be glad it not an automatic
Craig - Who doesn't even like droping the oil pan off an auto tranny.
I would definitely do the mainshaft bearing. Be sure to inspect the synchros. If they are worn I would suggest replacing them.
Anybody else have any suggestions?
