In car camera mounts? Post 'em up!
I'm thinking of building one for my car (no roll bar/cage), and I have what I think is a good idea. It is always easier to copy a proven design though.
Anyone have one that works well?

i just built one yesterday!
C-pillar bar - 15$ shipped
2 U-bolts with washer type things, 3$
Plate of sheet metal 2$
Free vacuum hose in my friends garage
Nuts found in old tin cans
only things left are mounting the actual camera (ill be cutting a large bouncy ball in half to use as a kind of damper for the camera to sit on) and finding a washer to replace the thickness of the seatbelt clips since the brackets on the bar didnt work with them.
here you have it....

built my own yesterday and tested it out today. Worked great!!
it's 3/4" square tube steel, drilled for the headrests and I built in a little clamp, so it actually clamps onto the headrest bars. The camera is mounted on a hinged plate that has a thumb screw to adjust the angle up & down to correct for seat back angle. Also has a eyelet for bungee cords that are then hooked to the seat brackets to take out vibration. I'll post up some vids when I figure out how to get them off the camera.

That looks like it would chop your head off in an accident.

I wouldnt want a bar that wasnt screwed or welded to the frame of the car directly behind my neck. Just my $0.02 cents.

Two exhaust clamps, a strip of 1/8" thick aluminum, some rubber washers, and a cheap mount...

The results were decent: video here
I believe that the small amount of shakyness you see is from the cheap mount's adjuster not tightening down all the way (I'm going to upgrade to the one from $14 tripod from BestBuy), and a lack of rigidity in the mounting point on my camera.

The headrests go through the bar, and it is clamped down, for it to chop my head off the headrests would have to shear off. That means something would have to directly hit the bar, in which case i would be dead anyway.
If I had a cage in the car it would have been way easier to come up with a mount for sure, or if ebay had c-pillar bars for accord sedans.

My old teg with camera mount from Ioport Racing.

I bought it from http://www.ioportracing.com. I got the square in the middle welded in though.
^If you don't have a cage or rollbar you should try a suction cup camera mount.
Also I totaly don't understand what stops the bar from rotating forward besides the tightness of the seatbelt bolts? I see the belts are now mounted on the bar so when you pull on the belts...the bar rotates forward? The belts should still be mounted to the bolts...just my thoughts

The bar is locked from rotating by the nuts in each end of it. It's designed for having the seat belts this way. Check out the webpage I linked to.

Hey I checked out the page but your pictures are better than thier pics lol. silly ioport
I know it has locking nuts on the bar...I meant up at the seatbelt bolt...the 17mm? 19mm? What stops the mounting plate from rotating forward? Like there are nuts on those bolts?
