Default vtec LED mod

I visited this site & i think it pretty explanatory on the mod. However, I've seen some other sites recommending to buy something like a "330 ohm resistor." Do i need to buy this for this mod? It doesnt mention anything like that on the website I viewed.

Depends on what LED you get.

What voltage/current is being put out by the VTEC wire?

To be on the safe side you should add a resistor.

I'll be using a 12V LED, and prob a 16g wire. Other than that, I'm not sure what else I need to know. I'm not sure how much current will be put out..

Does it matter?

You can tell electricity isn't my "thing." Help me out with this, Muffin!

What LED are you using? Getting one online? Link me to it and I can tell you what resistor you'd need.

*edit*

If you were to buy these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/20x-Blue-L...wItem

A 1/4W 470Ohm resistor would be more than enough and would dim them a bit too since they'd come bright as hell (to clarify more) you can using a 330ohm resistor would be fine too.

Something like this.

And can you clarify for me what a resistor actually is/does?

Well your purpose of putting one in would be to prevent a voltage or current spike going through and killing the LED.

If you go to your car you can see it ranges around 12V but really isn't ever exactly 12V.

The resistor just resists the flow of current

Eh, with that LED look at your "features"

# Typical voltage: 5.0, with a maximum voltage of 6.0V
# Typical wavelength: 430mm
# Typical MCD: 300
# Viewing angle: 24°
# 30mA (max)

Alright, well that is the LED im planning on using. That will work correct? How difficult is it to install a new resistor? And what exactly connect it to? Do i connect it to the wire right by the VTEC solenoid, and then connect the 16g wire to the resistor?

Also, I have tons of left over copper speaker wire, prob about 18 or 16g, would this wire work so I dont have to purchase all the other wire? Let me know!

What resistor should i look for?

16 gauge is fine.

If you get the radio shack LED (that exact one)

Pick up a 330ohm resistor 1/4W You really only need a 230 but they don't make those haha.

Wire it like this:

power ------resistor----- (+) led

ground --------------------- (-) led

The + is the longer of the two legs.

Would the copper wire that is used for stereo and speakers work fine for this job?

& i wont need to do any soldering, will i?

Copper wire would be fine, so long as it isn't the multiple strands.

And I would recommend soldering, I've never been a fan of stick it together and tape it.

Multiple strands? This is like the wire I have.
http://www.radioshack.com/prod...earch
Will that not work? Can't I just wrap the wiring around everything and use electrical tape to keep it together?

..Assuming soldering is out of the question.

Ehhhhh wrapping is ghetto.

This would be a great time to practice soldering as you can't really mess anything up.

AT A MINIMUM get the quick connects and crimp it

What do you mean by the quick connects? Are you talking about the caps that twist around 2 wires and connect them?

Soldering is really not a priority of mine, I dont want to buy a gun, either. I just want this done. I'll manage to make the wrapping acceptable for my taste.

Just tell me how i can do this. & Will that wire i showed you in that link work?

I recommend buying shrink tubing. Its only $3... and it looks clean!

The wire in the link should work, wire is wire for the most part.

The soldering however would only cost you $15 or so , 10 for an iron and 5 for a spool of solder. And you wouldn't have to worry about stuff coming loose.

I guess i'll be doing this LED thing this weekend. No resistor will kill the LED, right?

Well if you use the one straight from radioshack yes lol, that's a 6v LED on a 12V line, so it'd explode
