speed sensor issues
ok first off i got a 94 teg with a gsr motor. a week or two ago i replaced my dizzy. everything was fine. then i went out to see how it was running and my check engine light came on. it was the speed sensor. so i went out and replaced the sensor and still nothin. so i cleaned the connector and it started to work again. then i went on to test my car and speed sensor again. right after i hit vtec it stopped. so today i bought some electical cleaner and when i started to drive it the needle was bouncing around. then it just stopped. and wont move. i just dont get when it is done that. my rpm gauge works but my speedometer doesnt. any help? also does the dizzy have anything to do with it?
I've explained this in length a few times. Search for VSS and you may find some of my posts. In short, jack the car up on one side, rotate the tire while in gear and look for 5-0-5-0-5-0 Volt pulses on the signal wire from the VSS. The other 2 wires are ground and power. If that works, follow the wire up to your speedo and make sure it's not shorting on the back of your intake manifold. If that still doesn't work, borrow another speedometer and test that.
ok the speedsensor is new. my check engine light comes on after awile. i checked the wires for volts with the ignition on. the orange wire said 9 to 10 volts. and the black and yellow wire said 11 volts. then i took the ground wire off the battery to reset the ecu and i decided to check the volts again. they measurements came out the same. is it supposed to be like that?and are the volts ok?
I do not think it should be over 5 volts (at least on the VSS signal wire), but I am not 100% sure on that. I remember it being 5 volt pulses on my 1994 civic.
Spin the tire and look for pulses of voltage, thats what the speedo counts to decide how fast you're going. Check for a short on the back of the manifold, that is very common and will lead to an irratic VSS.
Still could be the speedometer shorting out the line. Do you have vtec/does it work? I think the ecu will look for speed before engaging vtec.

vtec did work when speedo worked now it doesnt. the orange wire s the signal right? cause that wire was 9 to 10 volts without the car on.
vtec not working either? Then its the VSS or the wiring. I'm not sure about the colors, it has been a long time. I do know that if you have to wire it all up from scratch it is not really hard at all.
If you want to just pull the vss out and spin it with your fingers, that will work also. Just make sure you are getting pulses because that it what the speedo and ECU work off of.

Where did you get the 'new' VSS? The vss is a rotating on/off switch. I'm not sure why it's stuck ON in your case.
It's possible that voltage is coming from the wrong end of that wire (shorted to hot).
Disconnect the VSS plug and test the VSS by itself using the resistance setting on the multimeter. You should see infinite resistence to 0 resistance, between the power and vss as it spins.
