56k is a (slow) modem dude. it was one of the modems who brought internet through a phone line (you know, with the bleeping sounds 'n all)

56k - internet service based around Telephone networks. The term itself is relating to the download bandwidth that is received (56 kilobytes per second). It's not the only speed out there, but the most current on Telephone cabling.
