Default How to: JDM interior floorboard lighting install

First allow me to say this is being copied onto several forums. Some honda specific, some not. This will require me to explain things a tad unusually, so bear with me.

Honda OEM offered an interior lighting kit that consists of 2 green bulbs. 2 small wiring harnesses, and a small instruction manual that only people on the otherside of the world can read.

A few sites sell this kit for anywhere from $90 to $130. I saw it and crapped my pants. I knew there could be a better and cheaper way.

I scrolled through ebay and ordered a few LED's. Less than $20 for about 100 of these shipped from Hong Kong. I used a clear piece of plexi I had lying around and constructed this:

I used my big battery charger as a 12 volt source:

ZOMG!!! My eg!!!

ZOMG!! A Honda Odyessy!!1!one!!!

I threw the cables in the car so I could see where the LED's had to go:

Lit them up and played with positioning:

I dropped the passenger panel. The LED bar went EXACTLY where the middle clip/tab was. I had to cut the metal tab in the dash that held this clip. I marked it:

Cut it:

and hotglued it in place:

This is the quick disconnect I used. This allows me to drop the panel, unhook the light and service anything I need to get to. It will be loomed and try to look OEM:

Soldered, loomed, and extended:

I ran that wire to the driverside of the ar and started messing with the positioning of the driverside:

Cut and glued:

On the driverside, above the kick is this harness. The green/red wire controls the dome lights. It rests at +12v and when the door opens, it goes to ground.

Use that wire as the ground for this system.

The singular plug in the fuse panel has constant +12v. You will need to drop the fusepanel for easier access. This will be used for power to this system. I forgot to take a pic of my fuseholer and spade, but I used a 10 amp fuse to run this.

And FINAL results:

Very simple, and less than $25 in materials. NONE of the cuts are visable from the drivers seat and can be easily, and cheaply replaced if desired. And yes, it does fade EXACTLY like the oem lighting!!!!

Enjoy!

Thanks.

I'm probably going to switch colors and maybe lose 2 LED's while I'm at it. These things are a bit bright.

It's just the thinniest plexi we had at the shop. Maybe 1/8 inch thick. Scrap stuff really.

I drilled out the holes for the LEDs and set them in. Wired them in series/parallel and hotglued over everything to prevent a short.

what is the purpose of the plexi glass? Couldnt you just drill into the plastic panel instead and mount the led's there?

Yeah I could have, but it would have made "aiming" a bit harder. With it on the plexi, I can take it out when I tire of it, and it's easier to put it on a plug for easy removal of the hushpanel.

This is great. I have the JDM Honda Access kit, and now I know which two wires to tap into. I might have to cut as well, we will see, but I will post pics of mine when I get them installed.

So I've been riding around with it for a few days. Uhh, the green is beginning to get to me...lol. I've decided to swap them out for clear LEDs which will project a white light onto the floorboard.

The green looks great in the JDM HOP pics because of all the red in the interior. Eventually I will be switching to red seats and matching floormats, but that's a ways away. Once I do that, I'll toss the green back in.

Thanks for the compliments!

Umm, I'm not sure we'd use the same wires. LEDs are Light emitting diodes. Diodes allow voltage to flow in one direction. The HOP kit is actually 2 light bulbs, which would allow voltage to flow in either direction.

I'm using the plug on the fuse panel for my +, and the green/red for my - when the door is opened. At rest, the green/red has + on it. Putting a bulb in parallel with that circuit may damage the multiplexing circuit.

Scan the directions for the HOP kit. I'd like to see where it says to wire into.

not really JDM but nice install. I've installed the real one before and this one is pretty close. But more of a DIY.

The LEDs are wired on each pad are wired in series. So, basically 6 leds series, then the pads are paralled to the other.

Correct.

Make one of those pads for each side.

I'd go red to match the seats and steering wheel stitching.
