Free Online Racing Resource - What You'd Like to See?
For a while now I've been thinking about what I want to do with the resource I wrote (a book titled Go Ahead - Take the Wheel). Ever since I started working on the project, my goal has been to help as many people become involved in motorsports as possible. The book has been very well received, but I haven't reached nearly as many people as I would like. I've decided that the next "logical" step would be to put the contents online for free sometime in the next few weeks.
My question to you is in addition to the various subjects I cover in my book, what other racing related content would you like to see? (Not a chat forum; Honda Tech is the place for that and I will continue referring people here.) I've given thought to a section dedicated towards bench stories. I know there's a few really dumb things I've done some might get a kick out of. My book doesn't talk about driving technique itself. Maybe instead of referring people to buy books written by other people, I should include at least the basics on this site, again at no cost?

If you were going to do a website, I would start by demonstrating (videotape yourself) how to do certain maneuvers, i.e. taking a corner.
maybe a "beginners" section and a different section for the more experienced racer because not everybody that visit your site is going to be same.
or maybe you have a target audience?

Great ideas.
Right now my target is someone who is new or relatively new to autocross, HPDEs, and road racing, but there are sections related to the more advanced racer. One challenge is how to organize all of the information. I've developed the site in a way I think works, but who knows?

Something like this? http://www.turnfast.com/
unfortunately they don't update it anymore so half of it is just introductions.

The turnfast site is kinda the way I'm going with this. Interesting site - this is the first time I've seen it.
dinko, I've actually built the initial contents of my site using a program on my mac. I'm hoping to get some additional ideas about what you guys might find useful or at least entertaining.

Something that gives budding racers an idea of what they are going to spend prepping a car for different race series, and/or what they might be spending for one race weekend. Cost seems to be one of the biggest obstacles for most people, and if they had a good idea of what it costs simply to race, that might make them think twice about turbo kits, monkey bars and giant spoilers.
Proper lines on a track might be a feasable subject. How to approach long turns that tighten up as opposed to quick in and out turns and how to prepare yourself going from turn to turn. Learning the line so-to-speak.
Costs to become involved in motorsports was one a big focus when developing; I absolutely agree with what you are saying. It's hard to avoid those go-fast temptations.
I'll need work on adding information about the basic driving techniques and lines. I should do that for both autocross and track driving.
I personally am not qualifed to discuss differences between FWD, RWD & AWD. That's a good idea though. Maybe I can find someone else who can provide a good explaination and have them write that section.
One of my co-workers made the suggestion of trying to get women onto the site. He briefly explained how helpful that was to NASCAR's marketing effort and how much women often talk or spread the word. While keeping it strictly motorsports related and knowing there are not a significant number of women interested in racing - I think- I really have no idea how to do that (my wife jokingly said to sell womens shoes on the site).
Thank you very much for your input. Dave

That's still better than naked firemen or something... Don't need women on the site that bad...

Stats would be nice...ie, laptimes of various cars at various tracks.
Pole times of different race cars at different tracks (ie, comparison of Champ Cars and Grand Prix cars at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve or Champ Car and IndyCars at Mid-Ohio).

How about some content (video interviews at various events) that presents some of the actual people (from beginners to experienced racers) that take part in this sport? For me, meeting other enthusiasts at the events and just hearing their story and on-track experiences as the day goes on is fun. Maybe do a shortish video documentary like "A Day in The Life of an HPDE-1er", or "..HC2 racer". Or just go to an event and interview random people in the paddock, like the Tech Inspector or the Registrar or an Instructor or a racer hammering his front fender back into shape or someone just walking around and ask them "why are you here?".

My wife works for a company that makes handbags from seatbelt webbing. You would not believe how many of those damned things they sell to automotive related specialty shops...

At first I was like "seat belt hand bags? Whaaaaat?" Ten minutes later I find myself looking at that site saying "Gesh, these are actually pretty cute." John, what have you just done to me? It's three in the morning (time to change the baby), and you have me looking at handbags. I need to start ignoring What Not To Wear when my wife is watching it.
In all seriousness, maybe I need to speak with your wife about those.

I believe or at least hope that if I stay true to it's actual purpose, it'll work out well.
