who here uses a HANS / R3?
I don't have one yet, but am thinking hard about it. I need (want) a coolshirt system too, but I think head restraint may be higher on the list.
I only attent DE events, but even there cars scoot right along.
I'm sure you guys saw that guy roll his prelude at at t-hill the other day, and he says it was his safety gear that saved him (although it was still pretty painful).
Lots of HANS users here??

I think for the most part the only thing keeping a lot of people away is cost. I'd love to use a H&N restraint, but don't have the money right now. All of the NASA racers here will have to be using some SFI-approved restraint (both the HANS and R3 fit that bill) starting later this year, and a number of them already are. Are you looking for opinions on both, or what?
I run a HANS. I think all but 1 of the 15 or so HC racers we run with up here doesn't run one.
It isn't really that much, considering most racers spend between 600-1000 dollar a weekend.
I wouldn't race until i had a hans, so instead of starting in february i started in May

A Hans is a good idea, it helps prevents basilar skull fractures from hard impacts. As Stinkycheezmonky already mentioned they are not cheap, but you cant put a bill on your life.
Any restraint system is better than none.
I have the Hans Professional, about 1k The sport model is about 600 or so.. you should check out their site for accurate pricing.

I won't race without a HANS anymore...saved me a sore neck or worse once already. I've got a professional model, but the new sport models are tailored for the budget minded club type levels of racing. They have the new slider tether option too, which is nice.

Just throwing it out for discussion really. I don't have one, but want to HPDE a lot this year. Not many HPDE'ers in TX run with them, but all the club racers do.
in the evo community they're usually only used by the really fast guys...
thing is I use an open face helmet (not sure if they work with HN restraint) and I think I'd need different harnesses. (so it'd cost more than juts the device...)
Plus, one you have the different harnesses you ALWAYS have to run the hans or risk breaking your collarbones, since the harness straps are too narrow...
just thoughts

I run a HANS with 3" belts without issue.
Of course a HANS is worthless without a proper 5/6 point harness and a roll cage or roll bar to mount it to. I'm skeptical of harness bars. Too many of them fall into the category of the "one paycheck part" attractive to so many young enthusiasts with their first cars. I seriously doubt that any have been crash tested. And I'm confidant than none have received the level of engineering scrutiny that the OEM restraint system has.
Also worth noting is that a HANS is no panacea for preventing a broken collar bone. I am still recovering from mine. I'm convinced it actually was the HANS (in concert with a slightly loose lap belt) that broke my clavicle in Nov. when I rolled a sprint car. I'll take that over a broken neck anytime. I'll be with my HANS forever or until they think of something better. But it is only as good as its method of use.

PS: As tempted as I am to get an open face helmet for instructing and what not, I'm just too handsome a fellow to risk it. I'll be buying another full face Bell M3 as my one and only helmet. – Reasonable minds may differ.

Yeah a HANS is expensive....but ask yourself this------Is your neck/life worth The $700-$1000 it costs to get one?
It should be on the top of your list, not the coolshirt

^^ Agreed.
I use a HANS myself as well. I just started racing late last year, but I've been doing track events for years now. While Texas is hot, I have made it this long without a coolshirt, so I would ceratinly be inclined to buy a HANS before a coolshirt.
Any details on the Prelude at T-Hill?

not exactly totally tubeframe, but definitely not just harness bar either...

What kind of car do you have? Who did the cage? From what I can tell, it looks well built!
Will you be out at TWS in April? I'll be there, along with a friend who also races a 5Gen Prelude (his is black, mine is white). I think another guy we race with will be there as well in a white hatch.

My dad and I are using the Hutchens Hybrid.
I personally wouldn't even consider using a HANS brand unit for the fact that it relies entirely on the belts for safety--in the event of a side impact or multiple impact situation (common in rally, but not exactly unheard of in road racing), the belts can slip off the HANS collar and render the device virtually useless. In a single frontal impact, I'm sure they'll do well, but so do all the alternatives.
The R3 and Hutchens Hybrid, as well as the Leatt (not available yet) don't have this downside, so I think are a better and safer choice.

Hi 117,
I have a 92 Si hatch, somewhat prepped for DE (I hope). And by "have" I mean "am waiting for it to arrive."I just bought it a few weeks ago and it should arrive wednesday.

Piper Motorsports built the cage. not sure if that's good or bad. hopefully good.
I will be at TWS on Sunday the 6th for sure. I will likely try to make at least one more DE during April, not sure what club yet.
I'll look for you guys on the 6th.

Sorry, I should have been more specific on the date. I'll be out at TWS in April with NASA on the 19th and 20th. If you have a chance, come out there in one of the HPDE groups. A couple of friends of mine (both in S2ks) will be out there. One in HPDE 3/4 and the other in TTB (which runs with HPDE 3/4).
I've heard good things about Piper cages. They did the cage in Corey's H1 Prelude, IIRC.
I'll PM you my email address.
