Interior Gas smell ? 1990 Civic si
Just started noticing a fuel smell in the interior of 1990 civic a few days ago..
The smell is coming from the rear seat area behind the drivers side.
I had the rear interior taken apart, check filler neck, checked all fuel lines,
did a pressure test etc etc etc.. There's no leak ..
Spent a few hours on it.
So the mechanic buddy at my dealer told me that it could be a small small hole on the gas tank itself or a seal on the gas tank letting in fumes inside the car..
Should I just replace the tank (and fuel pump whle at it) ??
any ideas ?

I know a read a thread about this same problem a few days ago but i cant seem to find it.
Turned out when the guy dropped the tank he found a hole the size of a screw. Seems a previous owner screwed his sub box in and nailed the tank. You mite have the same problem, or maybe the tank just rotted a bit.
And yeah if you go through the trouble of dropping the tank you should replace the fuel pump while you have it apart, its probably the original one.

my 90 seems to have the same problem for the last six months or so but i cant find no leaks niether...its just when i add gas though.... sucks
So we found out today there was a screw hole drilled through the top of the tank,
(courtesy of yours truly)..

ops:
I guess this happened when I replaced my rear trunk mat and removed the subwoofer box and reinstalled it and drilled/mounted it to the floor.
So I installed a new tank, and replaced the fuel filter while at it.
Of note: The old tank had so much dirt/buildup when we drained the tank.
We poured it into a bucket and the dirt settled to the bottom.
Lesson 1, never drill a subwoofer box to the floor of your trank/hatch. LoL

Too bad you had to learn the hardway too! I'm just glad I can't take the blame for drilling the hole.
