Default piston to valve clearance

hey guys i just clayed my motor and found out that i have .050 of clearance, is that safe enough to run the engine.

Yes, if you're confident that nothing gets closer than that you should be fine. Many builders consider .040" to be the closest clearance tolerance.

Just keep in mind that if something happens to the timing you will have potentially catastrophic consequences.

ok well i clayed the motor with the cam gears at 0, 0 is there any way to get a little bit more clearance by adjusting the cam gears?????

Sure you can. Just advance the exhaust cam and retard the intake cam. It might screw up your power curves no end but getting more clearance is easy.

Isn't having a potential for catastrophic failure because of fubard timing pretty much a standard with Honda engines? Why go out of the way to acquire more clearance than necessary?
