Default 91 CRX Si A/C help needed

I have a 91 CRX Si its stock. AC has never been taken apart but the car was sitting for a couple of years. I would turn on the AC to blow the windows when they would fog. But it had no freon. I went to put in some freon the other day and as soon as the freon ran through, the compressor went crazy. It started squealing like it was gonna blow. I figured it was dry so I WD40'd the hell out of it but it wouldnt stop squealing. The belt is new and properly tensioned. What do you guys think?

thanks in advance.

Did you use R12 or R134a? Your stock components use R12 refrigerant unless it's been retrofitted. If you put R134a in there without retrofitting, I wouldn't doubt that you screwed your compressor up.

Did you have the system vacuumed before adding refrigerant?

It could also be that it was dry for so long that the clutch seized up.

Also, what did you spray WD40 on? Nothing in or on a compressor would need WD40.

Either way, it sounds like you need a new compressor. You probably should get a new drier and o - rings while you have th system apart.

I guess i messed up my compresor becuase i used R134. but not much at all only about 3 secounds of it. But i didnt have it vacumed. Im a newb to the ac deal. Can i still salvage this compresor?

as for the wd40 i sprayed it around the pulley area because i thought it was dry. i didnt spray any internal part of the compresor.

Ahhhh, I'd get a new compressor, then have your system serviced by a professional. It's worth the $100. Make sure you get a compressor that matches your brand, they have different fittings! (Mitsuba or Denso, there should be a label on it)

Regardless, you may want to read up on A/C system components and how they operate. There are some good threads in the FAQ in the 92-00 Civic forum.

Never, ever, ever, ever spray WD-40 on anything that has grease in it. WD-40 displaces water and will disolve grease. Don't believe me, the next time you are working on your car and your hands are full of grease, spray some WD-40 on them and wipe the grease off. Spraying the pulley will cause the bearings on the compressor pulley to lose the grease needed for lubrication and seriously shorten the life of the bearings. And being that WD-40 does not have a high viscosity level, it does not stay in the bearing very long.

As far as the A/C, are you sure that the system was empty? It could be that the system was fully charged and you have overfilled the system, which can also cause the compressor to seize.

thanks ill keep that in mind. As for the ac yea it was empty because i bought the bottle with the built in gauge and i did a reading on it before i added any of the freon and it was empty.

it shoots very cold ac but then the compressor will squeal after a few minutes of run time. I looked at it and the rotating part stops and then goes and it keeps doing that.

any other suggestions before i swap everything out??

Well, maybe take it to a shop first if it's blowing cold. The wheel starting and stopping is good news in that your clutch is working properly.

If the system was empty, you have a leak. Since you have a leak, take it to a good A/C place and have them diagnose it. There should be a minimal fee for this, but they should be able to tell you where the leak is. If you don't fix the leak you might have an issue later in the summer when you absolutely need the A/C.

As far as buying reman. compressors, just go with one that has a good warranty. Most places only warranty the compressors when you buy filter/dryers(also known as Aculators), so you will need to change that as well.

Good luck with the repairs. The clutch on the compressors can go bad and make noise, but keep your eye on it. I have seen them make a huge spark show at night and then the pulley breaks off.
