i remember reading a recommendation to wipe down the header with something to remove all the oils so the color change when heated will be uniform. is regular rubbing alcohol enough?

rubbing alchol will do fine as long as you use clean rags or towels and wipe em down really good. post pics. love to see clean headers.

 

just wear some rubber gloves.. i always wear those disposible glove whne i work on my car

 

you'll love them, i used mineral spirts on my set, but anything that removes oil will work.

You should have worn gloves but it's too late for that now. I used some metal polish I picked up at Walgreens on my exhaust and the **** works wonders I'm telling you. It really works. You just put a little bit on a rag and wipe it on the dirty surface and then wipe it off and it shines good. It's called MAAS. It's in a silver, blue and black small box. I would get some of that. Also post some pictures. I am probably going to get a Comptech header for my car.

Hell no, degreaser will more than likely stain it. Stay away from degreaser and polished parts.
