Default Gen V low oil pressure light at idle and tapping sound under power.

What do you guys think? At idle, the LOP light comes on after the vehicle is warm and has been driven a little bit. Then, even though the LOP light isn't on at higher RPMS, there is a slight rattle under load. It just started doing this a few hours ago.

I changed the oil to Mobil 1 to see if it would help. BTW, I'm not driving it like this. :-)

What troubleshooting steps would you take, and why? I'm very mechanically adept (suspension swaps, engine rebuilds, electrical), but it has all been targeted at Euro's.

Thanks!

your oil pump many be going if the oil pressure is low and if it sounds like a marble in the engine then it is a knock. You have to rebuild the engine if the oil pump is not good

Most likely the beginnings of a spun bearing, especially if it's knocking. The oil pressure light only comes on at a very, very low pressure (around 7 PSI), so there's definitely a problem. The knocking would indicate a problem with a rod bearing. Not certain, but most likely.

Would you recommend that I go after just the mains and rods, or do a complete tear down? And can you spin the top shell out of the journal without taking out the CS on a Honda like you can a BMW?

Thanks!

I'm afraid you're to pull the crankshaft out to replace top halves of mains as they're locked

If it's knocking, it's likely the crankshaft is already damaged.

OKAY...Update! There is NOTHING quite like a HUGE amount of copper colored chips of metal in your oil pan to let you know that U are screwed.

Why would I need a new block, out of curiousity? I haven't taken the caps off yet, but I'm interested in your experiences with this type of problem.

I know when this happens in BMW's usually the block is fine.

Okay, I need some help now. I have found the problem, and it was the #1 con rod bearing . It did not actually spin. It was coming apart, but I stopped the car before it vaped.

There isn't any scoring on the camshaft, but there is some heat bluing on the con rod. Is it possible to just replace the con rod bearings and the mains and be reliable? Or am I looking at remachining my crank/new rods/pistons?

Head looks fine, and so does the rest. Thanks!

Thanks for your input.
