Default bad gas, need help....out of ideas...

I currently drive a 97 EJ8 all stock except the intake. Currently im getting 25mpg at best shifting at about 3000rpm. If I drive normal I get about 20mpg. I mean what can be wrong? My car has new wires, rotor, cap, plugs, oil, pcv and my timing is dead on. Anyone have any ideas? By the way how does the fuel filter affect mpg? Also I notice my car lacks power. I mean I've seen other stock ex's and they seem quicker than my bucket..what gives?

No haven't checked my plugs. But my timing is dead on. Also on a side note I don't know if this helps you guys help me but....I recently did smog on my car not too long ago a couple of weeks. I passed but as I was revising the report I noticed that the max HC for my car was 66 and mine passed with 65 meaning it barely passed.

You might want to check out....

ECT. If reading cold the ECU will keep giving it gas. What does your temp guage read?

IAT. if reading warmer the ECU will keep giving it gas.

O2 sensor. If stuck at a certain voltage will not throw a CEL.

Fuel injectors. Might have one leaking or plugged.

Also check for vacuum leaks.

Well my temp reads at about a 1/4 or so. IAT sensor I wouldn't know since I have no cel's. As for the o2 it seems its still original. My car has 147,000 miles and everything in it seems to be stock from the dealer. School me on this...how can I check the o2 sensor? Is there anyway I can short so I can get a free replacement from the dealer since my car is still under 150,000 miles and it still falls under the extended warranty, so if anything breaks in the next 3000 miles I get it replaced for free from dealer.

You can get one of those Hayes service manuals for your car at your local auto parts store. I know they have the step by step proceedure on how to do it because I've done it before too. I would type it up for you but i'm at work right now and the book is at home...sorry. FYI, you'll need a volt meter to be able to read the voltage pasing and possibly the ohms. it's not hard at all, but you will probably need to make up some kind of makeshift pin to stab into the back of the connector to get a reading off of since the connector needs to be pluged in to check it. The above suggestions were correct.

Check o2, id just replace it since oil on the outside of the sensor could damage it, seafoam can destroy it.

If your at 1/4th on the gauge that is probably your answer right there. the thermostat is probably stuck open. Both my d16y8's are just SLIGHTLY below the 1/2 mark. I would say 45/100'ths.

This would certainly contribute to horrible mpg. Replace IAT too, its $18 from majestic.
