Default wheel bearing or hub/spindle problem?

took off a wheel and axle today and noticed my rotor felt loose. at first I thought it was just the rotor screw but thats not it. the whole rotor and hub feels loose. even when I put the wheel back on, I can shake it. how do I know if its a bearing problem or hub/spindle problem?

Just making sure that everybody knows when you bang on the knunkle assembly with anything withOUT the axle nut secured you have a risk of damaging the bearing.

I did this 2 months ago on my new daily. I took the axle nuts off with the wheels on the ground (Didn't have a spare person by to hold the brakes down, and didn't have air tools). So all is well but the wheel wont come off, f'n rust. So I gave it a few whacks and it comes off. But after putting everything back together the bearing is bad.

I'm not implying that you did this just putting some info out.

Your hub might also be bad if you are hearing any noise, but hopefully you can avoid this extra $100 expense...

Another warning - make sure whoever installs the bearing does so by PROPERLY supporting the races such that they don't put press loads across the ***** - this will cause your new bearing to go bad in short order. Ask me how I know !!!

Good luck.

like every body already said...wheel bearing. inspect the hub really good when you have it apart

I was working on a 1.8t Golf today that the customer was complaining about a grinding noise....yea usually bearing will hum a bit. his was straight up grinding, I was surprised the wheel didnt fall off. did both bearings and that one hub
