Default Civic Hatch General knowledge HELP ME!!!

Well lets start out by saying I'm a Nissan Buff. But my friend recently bought an rsx-S and I fell in love with the all mighty VTEC. So I recently decided I want a Honda of my own. I decided on going with the K20 swap into a civic hatch. I want an EG or EK but i was doing research on the different models and got confused. What exacally is the difference between the VX EK EG SI? From what I saw they are All the same car except different engines. Is this true? Is the EG an actual model? I've never seen a civic with the tag EG or EK on it. I've only seen the VX and Si badges on those hatches. Someone please Set me straight!

EG is the abbreviated chassis code generally referring to the 92-95 Civic, while the EK is referring to the 96-00 Civic. Technically, North America never got the EG or EK chassis, because our 92-00 Civics were either EH's, EJ's, or EM's.

Now there are trim models for each generation Civic.

92-95 trims were CX, VX, DX, LX, EX, and Si

96-00 trims were CX, DX, LX, GX, HX, EX, and Si

the 'eg and ek' thing are labels. they're the trim/model located in the vin number, its just easiest. Someone wants to talk bout a 99-00 si they talk bout em1, they wanna talk bout jdm hatch w/b16 and rhd, they call it eg6, eh3 = SI hatch (called eg still, for some reason) and eh2 are the other models, i believe.

the difference between VX CX and SI were not only engines, but CX had no power steering (from what i understand)

Engine trim shouldnt matter if you plan to swap, i say cx or vx all the way, they're lighter.

Good luck with the k20 swap, ill be doin one before too long i hope.

Umm one other thing. I also want to go for semi-luxury ie. power windows, power steering, Abs and so forth. Does the VX model come with these or is it only Si? I want the civic hatch with horizontal lights that would be 92-95 correct? Thanks for all your help Guys but keep it comming !!

The VX does not come with power anything. No, USDM 'EG' had power windows or power locks. The only trim that got some power was the Si, which got power mirrors and a moonroof.

If your looking for a hatch then the SI will give you the most power options of all the hatch backs. they came with power mirrors, power sun roof, cruise control, power steering, and rear disc brakes. If you are looking for abs it was an option on the 95 and I think the 94 SI (good luck finding one with it)

You're probably going to want to go with the lightest of the chasis and the most stripped down (CX) if you want to go with a K20. Its just easier to do with less things in the engine bay (ps, cruise, abs, a/c, etc)

You can always add power windows and locks later from an EX.

This isn't totally correct. We did get EG chassis here in the US as a few del Sol models and '92-'95 Civic sedan models.

The '98-'00 Civic GX sedan is an EN1.

You'll probably see people say that EKs are all right hand drive (RHD) and from Japan. This isn't true either.

I haven't yet finished the 5th ('92-'95)generation chart, but here's a 6th ('96-'00) generation chart for all the factory and optional accessories.

sweet guys thx a lot for your help and suggestions!!!

pennies_hatchie suggested that I get a CX because I'm planning on doing the K20 swap. Would it infact be easier to do the K20 wiring with this chasis seeing how theres no ps,pw, pl? and can I get PS from a different model after the swap is completed? I also heard somewhere that it is harder to wire up the K20 with the nonVTEC wiring harness compared to the VTEC wiring harness. is this true? and Is the CX in fact the lightest? I heard somewhere that the VX is the lightest of models.

Not showing off. Just posting info. I'm not entirely sure how sarcastic your response might have been.

I've always heard the 6th gen CX is the lightest US 6th gen, I'm not 100% on the 5th gen though... I thought it was the VX, but I could be wrong.

You should be okay with the CX as far as powersteering goes as it has a manual steering rack. Its almost as good as ps but without all the hoses and junk that goes along with it. I have a K20 in my DC2 and it cost me a lil bit more to get the powersteering to work. So its definately a luxury that you can go without

As far as wiring goes, its the same for all chasis. You dont even use the stock harness (depending on which aftermarket harness you go with) but I went with hybridracing and it just bypasses all the stock stuff. Its plug and play as long as you have the harness from the K20 and the aftermarket one.

Oh, okay. I'm just used to some people taking my posts the wrong way (as per my warning in my sig).

I post matter of fact because a lot of what I post is a matter of a fact. As per what Honda says at least. I figure they have decent knowledge of their cars at least.
