Default '00 S2K tranny

Hi Everybody.......(Hi Dr. Nick)

I'm looking at buying a Berlina black '00 S2K with 30,000 Km(18,000 miles). I have read up on the year, and apparently they have a problem with premature transmission failure. Does anybody know approx. how many km(or miles) the transmissions fail at, or is it just random? (Obviously the way its driven makes a difference) Also, I have only been looking at low mile s2000's (18-30K miles), just wondering if its worth looking at some higher mile vehicle’s? I’m not really sure where to cut off my search in terms of mileage. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks from canada, eh!

There is no problem with premature transmission failure. The transmissions function fine and I don't know where you came up with that.

I thought I read it on this site. Although I just searched around, and looked through the most recent topics as well and it didn’t turn up . Before I decided to buy an S2000 I had a list of 3 or 4 cars I was considering, and I have been doing a lot of research . . . So I may be thinking of another car. Where there any problems at all with the 00-01 transmissions that I may be getting confused with?

P.S. Any advice on where to draw the line on how many miles are on the car I buy? I’d rather spend more money, and avoid potential problems.(Sorry for the phrasing)

I've been reading up on the clutch buzz. Sounds like it is a real pain in the ***. Is it only in the 00-01, or in all the ap1's?

gear popping will occur to any trashed transmission. it comes from the transmission fork

buzzing probably comes from the clutch and there is nothing wrong with having to change a clutch, especially a stock unit on a performance car. it is normal, is it a wear item.

the 2000 trannies will blow the F out at 64 456.22 miles exactly.

i have an 01 with about 82k on it, i have driven the **** out of it and have never had a transmission issue. i have had to replae the clutch twice and replace the differential twice also. as long as you change the fluid and maintain the tranny, it should be fine.

How much did it cost you to replace the clutch and differential? Do you remember how many KM were on your car when they went? Thanks.

Does the AP2 have a much better differential then the AP1? I love the S2000, but after all the reading I have been doing, it seems as though they have some expensive issues that have no solution. Am I reading too much into it? I definetly dont want to be changing out rear ends all the time. I basically want a car that I can enjoy daily without worrying about stuff breaking. I'm not looking to track the car, I just want a daily driver that I can play around in sometimes(is that so much to ask!!!).

The drivetrain is reliable as just about any Honda so long as you don't abuse it. If your definition of "play around" includes clutch dumps, speed shifts, and inducing wheel hop (death to our LSD)...then you will need to pay to play.

My diff lasted 70k miles before taking a dump...this was after hundreds of clutch dumps for autox launches and working the hell out of the LSD on bumpy switch-back mountain roads and on track days.

The ap2 diff is marginally better. Honestly, if you saw the amount of additional metal that was added to strengthen the ap2 diff, you would laugh...but it does seem to help. The Torsen LSD is the same on all s2ks and does not like lots of wheel hop...over time it causes the worm gears inside to break.

The problem you will face is finding an s2k that hasn't already been used-up. Your best bet to find one that isn't used-up is to either get a very new car or a very old one with extremely low miles (meaning it was barely driven).

Thanks. Thats what I was hoping to hear My defination of playing around is basically just being able to shift through the gears faster then usual to get a bit of a rush. . Im not a street racer or auto-x or anythign of that nature, just a grown up youngster looking for a car that can keep me excited everytime I get behind the wheel.

dude stop worrying about millege its a Honda and there is nothing on this car that breaks at a certain mileage. If the car was well kept and had the maitnance done when needed then u will be golden. If someone beat the **** outa the car and didnt have the maitnance done when it was needed then u might have future problemes. The only thing that goes bad on this car with lots miles is the soft top. I have a 00 with 85k and I have had no problems I still have the original clutch and diff. So again mileage isn't an issue with this car it all depends on how well its maintained.

Haha, my initial thought was that with proper maintenance that the car would be good as gold. . . I can't help being skeptical, my last car was a chev.( for trans-am)

Hopefully I`ll be sitting in my very own S2000 within a month. Just started a new job today, so as soon as I get some time off to fly up and look at a few cars I should be set.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

I missed out on the black s2000 because of the stupid french-canadian language barrier. Looks like I am going to have to learn french in order to buy a good car in this country since all the low Km S2000's are located in Quebec.

clutches range from $300 and up and same with flywheels. to give you an example, i just changed my clutch yesterday...and it costed me about $700 in parts, but i did the install myself which is pretty difficult on these cars. the first diff i snapped at around 65-70k miles. the second one snapped about 5k after that (i had bad axle seals that caused the fluid to leak out. I ended up payed about $750 for a ap2 differential.

i drive the pure **** out of my car. as long as you dont drive it like a tool , you will be fine.

What part of Quebec? One of my best friends lives in Sept-Îles. You silly french canadians and your french language barrier .

To anyone who cares:

I went to my honda dealer today, and It looks like he can order a Mint '05 Berlina s2000 with very low mileage in for me this week I have to go up tomorrow to pay a depost before the order is shipped, Very excited! The car hasn't missed any maintenance, and it was all done at Honda. He is even going to give me an extended 3 year warrenty.

well for anything in the 18-30K miles range:

2000-2001 goes for about 22,500-23,400 + tax.
2002-2003 about 25,500-29,500
2005-2006 35-40K
2007 ive seen as high as 48K
and the 2008's are about 57K taxes included

I am in Quebec, the town, pretty far from Sept-Iles.

It ain't a barrier, it's our culture !
