Default "how to correct timing for dummies"

hi to all - i just registered to this site............
car info: 1995 prelude se h23a
mods: intake, header, exhaust, complete ignition system, NOS

heres my deal
my time belt broke about 2 months ago- i choose to to let a local shop fix the problem- when the belt broke it bent 4 valves- the valves were replaced and the gaskets from the head gasket up was replaced- i choose not to goto machine shop with the head because the car never ran hot and its only got 96000 miles on it- the shop manager also used a tool which i forget the name of and he sd it was level- fast forward a week later i get my car back- the head gasket is leaking oil! guess i shouldnt had cut the cost saving corner of going to a machine shop- so the lude goes back for "warranty" work...... they repalce the head gasket with a "better" one and sent the heads to the machine shop- fast forward about 2 weeks later--- finally i get my car back- i was so excited- first of all i notice a whislting sound form the motor- first i thought maybe they added a turbo for no charge due to the aggrevation i have been thru the past month- but i popped the hood no such luck- i was thinking exhaust leak but it sounds like it coming from the crank pulley, the car doesnt seem as peppy- but i'm thinking the temp here has warmed up alot since my baby has been down for 2 months- however when i get it home it doesnt want to idle right at all- even goes dead sometimes(it has never did this) there seems to be a noticable power loss- and my air fuel meter is reading rich while idling- i pulled the plugs(they are black as ****) so i'm assuming running extremely rich- and i'm also assuming due to timing. power loss , black plugs, crappy idle, o and found about 5 drops of oil on my shop floor- this is the first time i have let anyone touch my car other than me and friends-- because i dont know anything about setting the timing- my question is would incorrect timing cause these probs(all except the oil leak and whislting ofcourse)

Ahhh. Try correcting the spark timing. Cause when we did it on the mustang in my auto class that thing would idle like **** until we got it just right.

Yes, the first thing I would do is double check your ignition timing and cam timing...if those aren't right the car will never run good.
