Default 1985 Porsche 944 Turbo

Has anyone of you ever owned or driven one? How does it compare to the R on all aspects?

whew it took me a while to figure out which estate i had that 1985 porsche 944 turbo parked out... and then about 5 minutes to sort through the many keys to my mansions...

then i flew over on my private jet and test drove it....and what i have to say is, its a 15 year older car than the ITR....but its fun to drive never the less!

I hear maintenance costs can be a bitch, such as the price of a clutch job or timing belt replacement intervals of 30K miles.
Not to mention having to pay Porsche prices for replacement parts.

Drove one in 1993 or 1994.... can`t remember the exact year...

Had been a very common Porsche model in Germany in the 80`s and early 90`s..

I`d say it`s underestimated... Well it is a Turbo (the 944 models got Audi-engines)... turbo is f/i... and completely different to an ITR.. Not comparable.

The 944T is nothing special, you can find it for small money everwhere to buy..

A friend of mine drives a 944 in PCA HPDE's. He's had three that I can recall, the best being a 944 Turbo "S" model. Great car right out of the box. But, too expensive for him to maintain and/or upgrade. He has sold it and bought an older 944 Turbo. Now he has to resort the entire suspension. But he loves the car nonetheless - very fast around track.

Uh oh........preparing to drop a knowledge bomb.....

Well, I dont know how canada is, but in the US, there was no 944 Turbo until 86. Moot point. My sister has one, we've had a 944 of some sort for at least 10 years. They drive wonderfully, handle very well, brake well, look good, etc. The Turbo's are very fast in stock form, and like most boosted vehicles, can get stupid fast for a minimal investment. Go to any Porsche Club driver's school, the 944 Turbo will be the second most numerous car (after the 911 of course) because they are fantastic on the track. All that being said, they are an absolute pain in the *** to maintain and work on. The engine bay is cramped as hell, parts are ridiculously expensive, and Porsche Mechanics stock KY jelly for customers.

Direct Comparison with the ITR: Speed wise, my sister's stock 86 944 Turblow is a touch faster from a stop, on the highway the boost rules. handling: the Porsche is very very neutral and has great amounts of grip, very little body roll and brake dive. the stock 4 piston brembos do a good job slowing the car down. the steering on the Turbo is (IMHO) perfect, just enough power assistance to make it livable, but tons and tons of feel, which i love.

With the market (both the porsche market and the stock market) the way it is, one could easily find a good condition 944 Turbo for significantly less than an ITR....but after a few months of ownership, the gap will close with the price of maintenance. No matter how much you spend, it is still at least a 13 year old car, and will never EVER be anywhere near as reliable as the ITR

hope this helps, any more questions, i'd love to answer them

my father has a 1987 944 Turbo.... great car. I drove it for awhile before I got my car. The handling is supurb and still decades ahead of its time. On the highway in boost it keeps moving, my friends in thier Rs and other Civics hybrids could not keep up with me on top speed runs. Not a drag racing/off the line sort of car, gear ratios are way off for it.

Overall a great car, find one in mint condition. Only problems so far with my fathers car is the turbo. It has to get rebuilt but that just means bigger turbo FYI he owned it since day one, and it has about 65K on it right now. Very reliable in my opinion if well maintained. I will probably buy one of my own and do little modifications like mass air flow kit great hp!

GLUCK
