Default Brake Hopping - Brembo Vs HFP Brake Set - Honda Civic Si

I get a lot of brake hopping when I'm pressing the brake to slow down and I hit bumps. I've heard the Brembo brakes are a great improvement but $2600 installed vs HFP brake system (Slotted Rotors, Hi-Perf brake pads) for $700 Installed. Anyone know if that HFP brake system a waste of $$?

Keep in mind if you opt for the Brembo setup, you'll have to have a set of aftermarket rims that will clear the calipers. The HFP is a good alternative, but there are cheaper after market pads, rotors, SS lines, and fluid you can purchase for cheaper and possibly better performance.

You're trying to compare a complete aftermarket replacement braking system, to slotted rotors and pads?

You really can't do that. Of course the full replacement is going to be better. But that doesn't make the HFP kit a waste of money.

Brake hopping on bumps?

I think you might be describing the ABS kicking in? (I get this once in a while, too)

Either way, larger brakes aren't designed to reduce "brake hopping"...

oh, I thought bigger brakes would help with the hopping, Charged Si who posts often had Brembos installed for the same reason, he said it was a lot better. It almost makes like a grinding sound and it feels like it's not going to stop right away.

^Dude start your own thread.

To the OP, like the others said when you are on the brakes and go over a bump your abs goes off and you feel the pedal pulsate and hear the noise.

I tried out the HFP kit (getting it shipped directly to a local dealer for install really saved me a wad of cash...) but found an aftermarket set up was a much cheaper alternative that was just as effective.

I just matched Brembo rotors with Hawk HPS pads. Great combo. Braking distances were the same all around (stock Si brakes, HFP kit, and my latest set up), but there's much better pedal feel and longevity for either aftermarket set up. If you want my honest opinion, just pick up a good set of rotors and pads. A huge brake kit like the gran turismo is only good if you track/autox or if you canyon run for extended periods of time. Otherwise, they're a waste.

Well said.

I've done alot of track driving, as well as wheel to wheel racing in the Honda Challenge.

There's no need to upgrade brake size, calipers, or slotted rotors for the street. If you track your car, a good set of pads and fresh brake fluid is more than you should need if your doing runs.

My experience with my Civic is that the brakes are more than adequate, although the ABS seems a bit sensitive- and works just fine anyway.

I'd wind up repeating what the guy above said

The stock brakes are more than adequate for street use. Just upgrade pads, rotors, and fluids...thats all you need. Also, remember tires play a big part in braking. Stickier tires are directly related to shorter braking distances.

It's a great set up. Although you have other problems when you upgrade to the Brembo GT kit. You have to upgrade your rims - I've seen it done on 17" rims. The brakes bite harder, but if you don't upgrade your tires you actually might have LONGER stopping distances due to the increased rotational weight.

Also, think twice about getting drilled/slotted rotors. It's more for looks than anything else.

My pairing has stood up extremely well. Also just upgraded to stainless steel lines.

I just try not to brake on bumps. Pump the brakes if you have to.

Way to bump up an 8 month old thread.

Why would I have to upgrade my wheels? The only reason I can think of is so it could clear the caliper. It's the tire that should be upgraded. When doing brake upgrades it usually reveals a weak link like tires. Start with tires for braking improvements.

BBK kits aren't supposed to increase stopping power or reduce stopping distance per se. They are designed to hold up to the repeated braking applications seen in race applications. BBK's on street cars are pointless and are for show purposes only but do look good. If you want great stopping power get some Brembo or StopTech OE rotors, Hawk pads, some SS braided hoses and some higher temp fluid.

If I HAD to get a BBK it would be something found on fastbrakes.com where I could use a stock or close to stock sized rotor and a 4 piston caliper.

I dont know about you guys BUT I LOVE HAWK PADS. Honestly I put them with stop calipers on my 2000 civic si and it was the best investment I have ever made in my life. I LOVED THEM.
