Best tranny for a built turbo motor?
Ok, most people favor the LS tranny because the gears are longer and it has a 4.26fd instead of a 4.40fd. I am just wondering what kind of trannies all the BIG turbo motor people in here use
ls and gsr are my favorites....if I can get a gsr for cheap, I would get that over the Ls, but when do you find gsr's for cheap nowadays
Try highway driving with a 4.78:1 jdm final drive...doesnt make for a pleasant ride at all. I love my LS, 5th gear is so dope for highway driving. Its basically the same as the vtec trannies 1 and 2nd, but 3rd and 4th give me a bit more room to stretch out before shifting. Dont forget the 5th gear!!! I cant stress that enough...lol. I loved the 4.78:1 final drive when i got the itr tranny in my other hybrid, now i hate the thing! Swapping trannies would be an idea if it werent for the quaife in the ls.
I am using a somewhat custom tranny
GSR casing and final drive (4.40)
1/2 GSR
3/4 B16a
5/R LS
Quaiffe diff
A shorter gear will accelerate you faster than a longer gear assuming traction is equal. I used the GSR first and second gear b/c that's what I had. The differences between it and LS and others are very small. I used the B16 3/4 set as it's much shorter, and traction by 3rd gear should be decent depending on suspension and power level, therefor I will accelerate faster through the traps. I went with the LS 5th for obvious reasons of cruizin baby. With a simlple graph made by my tranny tech using my street tire size of 215/45/16, the 5th gear will give me 3200rpm's at 70mph, and will top out at 200mph at 9000rpm - I'll never see it, but it's cool to know it's possible.
