Default Crank pully Bolt Keeps Backing itself out.

Just as the title says, it keeps backing it self out and making the crank pully wobble, ive tried to tighten it down and it still comes off, i dont have an impact gun but i will try this weekend with on to see if it stays. Has anyone had this problem or have an idea of what is causing this. Some one suggested to me that it could be a broken motor mount but i dont know, i havent checked. Thanks

sounds like you're not torquing it down enough. Use the crank pulley tool with a breaker bar to tighten it if not an impact wrench. Using a regular socket and ratchet isn't going to do the job.

First don't use an impact gun. Torque it down correctly with a torque wrench. (Don't remember the number but im guessing 130 ftlbs.)

Does your bolt still have the washer on it?

I havnt taken it off to look at it but i would imagine it does. Alls i had at the time was a 4 way lug wrench and it seemed to work but when i got back to school it started again, so im towing my car home to work on it at a friends house who is a mechanic so hopefully it will be something simple. but it has been fine for about a year since i had the motor rebuilt.

I've honestly never used the crank pully tool. I've always popped it in 4th and had someone hold on the brakes.

I just destroyed my crank with the same problem OP! Be careful! I used a impact gun on mine when I installed a new timing belt....well about 3 months later the bolt backed out. So of course I was like wtf? I used a wrench to put it back in and then a impact gun again.

Well little did I know I had stripped the threading in the crank from usinga impact gun, and then from driving around with the pulley wobbling around I had also managed to destroy the key and keyway on the pulley, destroyed the keyway on the crank shaft, and destroyed the threading on the bolt.

I had to go buy a new crank, bolt, keys, and balancer (pulley). I advise you to take the bolt all the way out and inspect the crank threading. I advise further to get a thread chaser and double check the threads with a chaser/tap.

Then get the proper torque setting and torque wrench and torque it down, as stated above, with someone on the brakes and the tranny in 4th.

The crank pulley bolt, off the top of my head, is the second most torqued bolt on the car. That being said, I would just do it right the first time and torque it down properly.

What a PITA it would be to have to rethread or reverse out a snapped bolt.

If you have a weak clutch or brakes the 4th gear and standing on the brakes will be useless. Remove the engine stiffy, (flywheel cover) have a friend put a pry bar into the teeth of the flywheel and torque it with a torque wrench. However, since you say it keeps backing out, inspect the bolt before reusing it.

It even states in the shop manual to replace that bolt and washer after removing.

You got the information needed already, but I want to know what makes you think an impact wrench would properly torque down a bolt??

Proper torque and if needed some Loctite 242 just for good measure
