Default Threaded hole on back of head, what is it?

There's a threaded hole on the back of my head, above the alternator right below where the valve cover sits on the head. I have no idea what it's for, and i was thinking about drilling and tapping that hole a bit larger to mount my knock sensor.

Does anyone know what this hole is for? and can it be drilled and tapped safely?

This hole is simply a place to bolt a chain for engine removal. I'm not sure whether it can safely be tapped larger (or how much).
