Default newbs guide to tuning

i'm in the planning stages of building an engine, (b20z vtec build) for a weekend driver car and I'm looking around at ECU's and tuning (hondata cought my attention) so is there a guide for newbs like me to really understand ECU's what they do, aftermarket differences, and how to tune them.

You can start with how an Engine Works, and then Go on from there.

thanks for the help it all seems so confusing (i grew up on carbs and no ecu's) for my engine build project
