Most of you guys dont know me, but ive been a part of the crx forum since the first day HT came to be. A few years back i stopped coming in here because most of the posts were retarded, and the responses in said posts were even more retarded. I keep popping in every once and a while, and ive noticed that this forum has begun o get back to its origins...the "ef" chassis and how to make it perform the way you want it to. So ive decided to start posting in here again in hopes that it can stir some decent discussion. Heres my first pathetic attempt at such a post.
I bought my crx in the summer of 01 and immediatley fell in love. i drove around on the stock motor with i/h/e for a few months and had fun, but quickly got bored. So i started collecting parts for a b18a swap. I couldnt decide what clutch i wanted to use, so i started researching. I read about Exedy and their loyalty to sport compact racing, and how thier parent company(Daikin Clutch?) supplied every major Japanese Manufacturer with OEM clutches...so i decided to go with them. Unfortunately, you couldnt buy clutch kits from them at that time, so i decided to go with the HD pp and full face sprung disk(which later became their stage 1). Needless to say, i loved the clutch. It wasnt much stiffer than stock and the engagement was perfect. I had driven some of my friends cars with other clutches and hated how most of them had the grab-n-go feel to them. The Exedy drove like stock with just enough pedal pressure to let you know it wasnt stock.
Over the next few years i had countless amounts of races...most of which were illegal. I broke every part imaginable, but the clutch held up beautifully. I eventually got tired of reading about people getting killed while street racing, so i ordered some slicks and started hitting the local 1/8th 2-3 times a week. I figured my clutch would eventually go out, but after 100+ passes on slicks it was still driving as good as the day i installed it. I couldnt believe that this clutch had handled so many 5k rpm drops on slicks and hadnt skipped a beat(wish i could say the same about the axles
), while my friends were replacing their clutches every year or two. I was sold on Exedy at this point, and had converted many ACT, CC, CM, etc. users to Exedy loyalists.
I eventually got tired of running 9.3's, so i decided to go turbo. I knew that this would eat up the weak stage 1 with relative quickness, so i went ahead and ordered the Exedy stage 2. Well everything that could go wrong with the turbo install DID go wrong. It ended up taking a month to get it running, and even longer to get it running right. At this point, i was starting to get burned out on the car and didnt want to spend another weekend under it...so i opted to hold off on installing the stage 2 clutch. I figured that this decision would come back and haunt me, but it never did. For 10 months the clutch took and insane amount of abuse with a motor making 186ft/lbs and never gave any hint of giving up. This was simply amazing considering that the clutch was 4yrs old and had over 90k miles on it...not to mention that it was only rated for around 145ft/lbs. Unfortunately, the motor blew on the very first pass at the track...but i still ran a 9.3@82mph on 2.5 cylinders and 5.5psi
Since then ive put another 80k miles on the clutch. It has just recently began to show signs of its age. Its started to chatter when its cold, and it feels a little sloppy once its warmed up. I just ordered another Exedy stage 1 and ACT streetlite flywheel, and im hoping i can get just as much abuse out of this one as i have with the first(and only) clutch ive used. This is by far the best investment ive ever made for any car. Ive gotten my moneys worth ten times over, and i couldnt be happier with the way it performed. The only way ill use anything other than Exedy is if they dont make one for the car i have
Cliffs: Exedy stage 1 clutch takes 7yrs and 170+k miles of abuse. Its withstood enough passes at the track to fill a shoebox with timeslips, outlasted 3 engines, and taken tons of beatings while making 40ft/lbs more tq than it was rated for. By far, the best clutch EVER!!!

I too have an exedy clutch in my civic. It is only a stock replacement version(stoch pressure plate with an exedy clutch disc). I am running a sohc zc with a header and exhaust, so not a lot of power but still more than a d16a6(what it was made for). I must say that i do love this clutch and i have put it threw only about 10000 miles but it still feels brand new
I plan to go supercharged in about a year or so and when i do i will definetly be giving Exedy a call for either a stage 1 or stage 2 clutch from them.
