Default VSA saved my ***!

So I was in columbia, sc tonight celebrating st. patty's day... well the festival i went to was rained out.... good thing i didnt start drinking yet. on my way back to charlotte i hit some heavy rain do to this crazy weather thats moving through. im going 70 mph in a 70 mph zone... next thing i know my car is loose and the vsa is blinking... i was in cruise control so there wasnt any aggressive driving involved.... seconds later the car levels out and im back in control.... i have no idea what happened but the car straightened itself out... i was impressed...

my understanding of the VSA was basically the front tires loosing traction and killing acceleration to control slip, does it also brake each wheel like some other traction control cars do?

That's what the Traction Control system does.....Kills the power to the wheels in a loss of traction.

VSA operates differently. To my understanding I believe it actually applies braking pressure to the appropriate inner/outer wheels to counteract understeer and oversteer....which is the situation you got into. In some cases it also reduces the engine power to help regain control.

That's why you were able to maintain control of the car.

Again i'm not 100% sure if that's how it works with the Honda Civic.....but that's how ESC/VSA systems typically work on most vehicles equipped with them.

Hopefully you've learned a valuable lesson from this near catastrophic experience.

Good to hear you're OK. Thankfully I never had to rely on VSA in an emergency situation. It intervened when I went autoxing and when I was driving in fresh snow, both situations I kept turning it off to maintain better control of the car.

Well, being that he was on a highway, under-/over- steer would not have been an issue.

vsa is traction control, oversteer, and understeer.

it indeed does save lives. it saved mine once also.

to best describe the situation i was in ... you hit a deep puddle and you can feel your car slow down almost like a jerk... well it did it on the left side then a second later on the right... so made my car wiggle side to side, way more than i feel comfortable with... but then VSA light was blinking and i basically straightened back out....

sorry this isnt much tech related... guess im just supporting the VSA, ive seen a bunch of people knock it down... im not a professional driver, or mechanic but im interested in your thoughts.... thanks everyone

Technically it could. Losing traction in the rain to the point where the vehicle begins to "drift" can create the illusion of oversteer in which the computer detects and corrects.

Yeah....not to be a dick or anything...but you really shouldn't have been going 70mph in heavy rain. As the vehicle goes faster and faster it becomes exponentially more difficult to control in the event of a mishap like what you experienced.

No matter how upset you were about breaking up with your g/f...that's still no excuse. Life goes on......but not if you're DEAD. Next time slow it down a little.

so u hydroplaned. my case was snow on a canyon road. it was off and on and some parts were covered and some werent. and my car slid on a patch of snow, then gripped the damp road and started modging uncontrollably, then the vsa turned on, and in a couple seconds, it was straight again.

That last time (with the ESC on) they showed the Audi wagon doing the avoid manuever; is what my car was like last night, when I had to do the same thing, to weave through a herd of deer that crossed in front of me at 55 mph. I missed one by no more than 2 inches. Thing spit on my car LOL.

Remember one thing, if you're driving way over the car's limits(and yours), no VSA, ESC, or stability control will save you. Even those systems have their limits.

I personally feel they are good systems for the majority of drivers. But those with any type of further/extensive car training do not like them. Mine is off at all times.

Once I was driving and a asian (Not 2 be racist but it was an asian) cut me off, I drifted a little but eased off the gas and got traction. Its scary as **** when you have no control lol
