my friends wedge a screw driver between the fender and tire, then have someone drive the car forward slowly so the tire drags the screwdriver around the fender and pushes it out evenly all the way around. kinda ghetto way to do it but it works.

oh, make sure you have a good grip on the screw driver and are ready to walk with the car while it moves.

With the screwdriver method, I'm guessing they said "Screw it." With the tool Spockrocker posted, you'd use a heatgun on the fender lip for awhile, then roll. While that tool is expensive, its also very easy to use and produces great results.
<--- Has tried several methods of rolling, that tool is the best. Hammer is second best, if you don't care about your paint too much

Roll the fenders or just crush the lip? If you're rolling the fenders, you should use a fender roll tool. If you're just crushing the lip, use a heat gun/hair dryer and a mallet.

i thought "roll" and "crush" were about the same meaning.

Nope.
This is a roll. I used a fender roller and have the whole car re painted and the upper fender needed work because it collapsed (expected). It's more involved :

You can crush without chipping by Heating the paint up pretty good with a heat gun or hair dryer and then using a rubber mallet to SLOWLY crush it in from front to back or back to front. SLOWLY means crush it in incriments. Go back and forth. SLOWLY.
This is a crush.

that fender rolling tool, will it crush the lip? im more interested in just crushing the inner lip back without messing up my paint

That's how the pros do it.

Yes you can crush the lip with a fender roller. BE CAREFUL. GO SLOWLY. You wont chip the paint with a rubber mallet either. If you crush it down too far, you will chip the paint anyway .....fender roller or not. You need to heat the paint up to do either, and the paint will only "stretch" so far before it cracks. Buy some touch up paint and just kinda put a coat on it with the brush after wards whether it chips or not. It doesn't hurt.
If you get an alignment for toe, your tire wear issues will be far less.
