Sounds more like a fuel or spark problem than a starter problem given that the engine cranks.

a) did you make sure everything was plugged correctly?
b) were all grounds reattached?

little things, but important nonetheless... id go through there with a fine-tooth comb.

I agree. You also should test whether you lack spark at the plugs, which seems likely. This will help focus your troubleshooting effort.

You need to check whether there is spark at each plug. To do this, disconnect a plug wire from a plug and insert a good spark plug into the end of the plug wire. Ground the threads of the plug against a convenient metal engine part and have your buddy crank the engine. You should see a bright spark at the tip of the plug. Repeat for each plug wire. If none of the plugs has spark, then check the coil and igniter in the distributor and whether the distributor connector is getting power.

ok i did that. there was no stark. so i checked it from the dizzy cap to the wire and no spark either, so took the cap off and checked the icm with my multimeter accroding to helms and that looked good. so i looked at the cap and the little contact points look worn. so im gonna go replace it and hope it works. gonna get new plugs to.

Did you check the ICM and the coil? A problem with either could lead to "no spark".

Before replacing the distributor cap and plugs, you should test the coil.
