my brake lights arent lighting up. my regular tail lights are lit but then when i hit on the brakes the lights dont get brighter. i dont want anyone rear ending me so any help?? im a noob at this so i dont know what the hell is going on.

 

Check the fuses under the dash. Replace any blown ones.

 

Is this the 95 GS-R? If so, does your horn work? Underhood should be a 20 amp fuse labeled stop/horn. If your brake lights and horn are out this is probably your problem. Check this fuse in any case. If that doesn't fix it go to the rear taillight assembly. Use a meter to check for voltage at the wire for the brake light. I think it is Green with White stripe. Have a friend hit the brake pedal for you. If you have voltage there change the bulbs. If not you probably have a bad brake switch, this should be high up on a bracket that contacts the brake pedal arm. The brake arm holds a button in until you press the brake. When you press the brake the button releases and completes a circuit that lets the brake light see ground. This should swap easily. Good luck. I'll check in later.

 

yea my horn doesnt work either. lolz. i had a tach on my car before and i took it off by just cutting off the wires connected to it cuz the wires were like under the dash. now my horn doesnt work either and my cruise control.

 

maybe your tail bulbs are out? Replace them if anything?

 

the fuse wasnt blown and the tail bulbs are the same for the brake lights. they just go brighter when you hit the brakes.

 

ineresting that your horn doesn't work but the fuse is good. try swapping that fuse anyway. i've seen ones that look good but aren't. did all of this start right after you removed the tac? if whoever put it in used the brake circuit to power the tac and you cut all the wires together you would have blown the fuse. You should figure out where the tac wires go anyway. Not a good idea to leave live wires laying around in the car. The plastic below the steering wheel comes off easily. two screws in the corner at the bottom and one behind the change holder (i think). The bulbs light up more when you hit the brake because you have dual element bulbs. The brake element could be bad but not the parking light element. It would be weird to have three brake lights go out at the same time though. Assuming your third brake light doesn't work either. If all of this started after you cut the tac out, I would track those wires down first. Then remove them. Next replace the fuse (20 horn brake) if that doesn't do it, we'll go from there. Oh yeah, before someone corrects me. The brake switch delivers power to the brake lights. They see ground all the time. Oops. Good luck.

 

OK, looked into it a little more. The 20 amp horn brake fuse is also part of the cruise control circuit. If your brake lights aren't getting power the cruise control module won't see that you hit the brake to turn it off. The cruise module also gets some of its power through the brake switch. sounds like a bad fuse or brake switch. in any case take out those tac wires. Check ya later.

Stop light switch most likely

 

its the brake light switch that is in the brake pedal. just replace that and your done.. do you have cruise control? if you do you need to get the brake light switch with CC. its alot expensive than the regular one.

 

ok i checked up on my car. it turned out to be a blown fuse. my horn works now and so do my brake lights.

but still one problem, when i press on the brakes the lights do pop up but theyre not bright. theyre really dim. so whats the problem now??

 

try with your parking lights on and step on the brakes. if it dont light up its the brake light switch because u said bulbs are ok and you replaced the fuse. correct me if im wrong...

yea i tried it at night. it was still dim. i didnt have my parking lights on though. but ill see again later tonight when it gets dark.

same thing happen to me and realized the bulbs weren't the right ones. they fit but didnt have the two bumps around the metal part of the bulb that they needed I guess.

 

So on my integra my break lights do get brighter but not by a lot i have aftermarket alteza , also my 3rd break light stays on, i kinda want to sell it also once I could get some feed back on how to maybe address my break light issues, and the front end was backed into so its a bit bent up but aftermarket lights still work and seem to be positioned right.

 

Do more than just check/change the fuses. Fuses only break when there is an electrical issue, and electrical issues in a car should be promptly corrected.

Also, dim lights are almost always the fault of a poor ground connection. Find a wiring diagram for the brake light circuit and clean up any gound connections with a wire brush.

I have the same issue. Rear tails work, but pressing the brakes do not light them up.

The horn works and the horn/brake fuse looks ok.

What else could it be?

 

same here with an old thread...im having the same issue...taillights work but dont brighten when stepped on...my horn works

 

check power and grounds. check for a break in the wiring. all but one strand could be torn in the wire and have a super high resistence and have almost no amps going to the bulbs to light up.

Is the brake light switch the plastic piece found in the brake pedal assembly?

What ever that is, it broke, replaced it but still having issues.

I'll have to check the wiring/power/grounds next.

 

Back from the dead. I was having trouble withmy brake lights turning on on my 2000 Acura Integra automatic. Checked all fuses and bulbs snd they were correct so I bought a brake pedal switch from autozone and just finished installing it. Prior to installing, the two main brake lights wouldnt work and only the third brake light would turn on when pressing the pedal. After installing, NONE of the brake lights would turn on. Rechecked the fuses under the dash and in the engine bay and they all seem correct. Horn still works as well.

Any help would be appreciated I'd hate to get rear ended out on the road.
