something a bit different...summer time fab
We just finished rigging a boat for one of our customers and were asked to make a portable music player to accompany it. Basically it's an oversized iPod station with about 800 watts driving 4 speakers. It has a small battery inside but is mostly run off a Honda generator they take with them onto the beach for parties and what not.
This started life as a Frigid Rigid ice box.

The sound is unbelievable for what it is. I had to add extra straps on the sides because the bass shook the lid on the corners.

If you look close you can see two offset holes on the inside and on the back. Basically the hole on the outside is lower than the one on the inside so water cant be sprayed into the box when they wash it. The stereo can be blasted at full tilt and the amp doesnt go above 110 degrees. I was originally going to use solar powered fans but was under a time crunch, i only had 3 days to have it done and that including getting some of the parts and figuring out how we were gonna do it.
There is a mack daddy version of this one on order and it will be much larger with over 4000 watts and 4 satellite speaker boxes.

We didnt get much time to test it but i had it cranked for 45 minutes and it was still going. It was designed to run off of their generator so the battery is under constant charge. I wouldve liked to not even use a battery to save weight but thats how they wanted it.
The guy we built this for has a 200' yacht (along with the 45' tender we just finished) and he travels to various islands around the world. Basically they setup on whatever deserted island they like with their private chefs under tents and everything. This is the reason it had to be somewhat compact, rugged enough to be bounced around and still perform well enough to provide music for an entire party.

You should be able to fit a 20W panel at least. Not to mention it's not going to draw 800W all the time as if it did, you'd drain the battery in an hour or less based on the size of that battery. If they are just going to be out on the open seas in tropical areas using this, they could benefit directly from a solar panel.

I was originally going to put solar powered fans in it but due to the time crunch, wasn't able to. There isn't any concerns with the battery draining because they always carry a generator to power the lights which will also plug into the internal charger in this box.
They are supposed to be adding a solar panel trickle charger on the boat we just finished for them. I can't remember the dimensions off hand but it's big enough to fit on the T-Top and slow charges the batterys while the 45' tender is being towed behind the mother ship.

This is great! The only thing that seems to be missing is a charger for the ipod. I've thought about doing setups like this before in some hot rods and have never thought of using an eq.

Definetly would've liked to have one, unfortunately the iPod station they gave me only uses the audio output on the top.

Nice...I work for Grant's Custom Rigging...it's a small shop, only 4 employees including my bosses wife. We specialize in offshore race cats but will rig pretty much anything that is brought to us. We just did a 45' Wally tender with Yanmar diesels for this customer as well.

You guys do some nice work. We are about to start on a 45' w/ twin turbine engines. Its going to be sick. We are also do a restore on a 1996 46' Cougar. We are putting in tri 1075 Mercury's. I do most of the fabrication and all of the welding there. This is my first job w/ boats.
