Default Pro/cons for ED chassis with h22 shifter mounting:(over or under)

Plans of a h22 swap in my future.i have pretty much everything under control
I just want to know of the pros and cons of
mounting the shifter assembly above or underneath the car.
I know about the console being a part of the idea, but im reffering to technical
aspects.interior will not be used in my car so for me function over fashion.
also does any use a rubber grommet where the cut the hole
to feed the cables to the crossmember(firewall cut) or does everyone leave the hole open ?

thanks.

I have done both, underneath on a friends Del Sol and on top in both of my Hatches. The Del Sol we really didn't have a choice, so we had to mount it underneath. It turned out nice, but was a little of a hassle with finding spacers and bolts to have enough clearance to mount the shifter box under the car. Mounting it on top is much easier, but the downside is you have a hole in your firewall where some heat comes in. Can be a little bothersome in the summer. What kind of car are you doing this to? Some cars you have to run on top, others underneath.

never never cut the firewall

If mounting on top it's as easy as making one rectangle cut and maybe a lil bend up of the front lip into the floor for the cables just make sure to make or use the factory bracket to bolt up or screw into the floor with sheet metal screws etc to secure the cables from not sagging you dont want to burn them on the exhaust

I can't remember if I routed mine between firewall and rear crossmember or under the cross member either way will work as long as there is enough slack
