Default losing oil

so I bought a 98 GSR shortblock from a local guy. said it was in good running condition. had to swap out the block because of a rod knock and didn't have time to rebuild. anyways, get the motor in and I drive it for 1-2 weeks without really checking anything. I check my oil and I'm almost 2 quarts low. I fill it back up and then check a week later, lost about 1 quart.

car doesn't smoke at idle or part throttle. car does smoke a little bit when WOT at about 4k rpm. car runs fine at any throttle.

what I was thinking is if it were the rings, wouldn't it be smoking all the time? I was thinking maybe bad valve stem seals? I did smell the oil and it smells like gasoline.

there's some oil that looks to be coming out of the pcv box on the back of the block. I replaced the PCV with a new one.

what do you guys think? I'm gonna do a compression test and leakdown here soon to see if I get any abnormal numbers.

Im in pretty much the same boat as you... Let me know what you find out...

On my way home tonight I could smell fuel, like I was running rich... It smelled good, but not like something I should be smelling when cruising down the freeway... Smelled like when you hit vtec hard in a low gear when running good gas... But I was just cruising along... Smelled it quite a bit on the freeway tonight

If you have visually checked the engine and see no leak, you are either burning oil from bad rings, or burning oil through your PCV system, or a combination...

I would check inside your intake before and after the TB and look for excessive oil buildup. If not that a leak down will tell you about the rings.

do the leakdown test.

are you sure your rear main seal isnt leaking?
take of the cover between the tranny and motor(inspection cover) and see if you have oil leaking from there.
