While putting in ARP headstuds and replacing the headgasket in my buddies z6, I forgot a step in the removal process, which is crank the motor to tdc and mark the cam gear/timing belt. I feel bad because I was basically there guiding him in what to do and I completely forgot about that. What can I do about it now? The head is already off and we are just about to install the headstuds.
I have a timing light so I will have to reset that anyways when I put the dizzy back on.

 

The engine/head should have TDC marks on it. If you have the head off, it's not really that big of a deal I don't think. Just don't forget to re-check it for TDC after you get the T-belt on.

 

Its not at tdc, I didn't do that. What im thinking is the timing belt probably will stay in the same place, so when I put the head back on, it will probably slip on to the same spot and I wont have any issues right?

 

for the head, the indent goes straight up, that will put number 1 at tdc. and for the crank, line up the white mark on the pulley to the mark on the timing belt cover.

I don't have the motor at tdc, I have the head off, and the timing belt is not marked. What can I do right now in this position to correct things?

 

you dont need to mark the timing belt, as longf as the crank and cam is lined up, throw the belt back on, give it the right tension and tighten it up.

 

Okay so im correct that all I need to do is throw it back on. The crank and the cam will not have been moved.

 

dude what so hard just turn your cam and crank to the marks and then put the belt back on. how sure are you that the marks didnt move. how are you guiding someone if you dont even know how to line up timing marks

But yes, put both at TDC. The belt doesn't care where it goes.

Just make sure you rotate the engine by hand 3 times and check that the marks are still lined up.

If the belt is loose. loosen the tensioner and then tighten it again. Rotate the crank by hand again and the belt should be tight. May take more then once to do that.

Where in the hell did I say I didnt know how to do that? I do. My question was not how to do that, but is that what is needed. Why am I guiding him? Because I've done this several times, and I'm trying to help my friend save money instead of paying someone to do it. Never once did I forget that step until today. We were rushing through it. God forbid someone asks a question in this forum that isn't "How fast will a swapped ls hatch run in a 1/4" or "Why isnt my vtec working yo?"
