timing belt noisy after install????
i just diid my timing belt and water pump change on my 96 gsr and after the install i fired it up and was nosiy around the cam gears area...any clue as to whats going on?? kinda scared to drive it, could it be that the belt is a little loose???thanks
The only belt I ever delt with was an accessories belt when installing a new altenator. It squeeked like hell for a few days until I thought "maybe its too loose" so I tightened it a tad and the noise went away. I don't know if that applies to timing belts but I figured I would throw out my two cents.
When you replaced the T-belt, did you set the tensioner to so-many ft-lbs, or something? The tensioner adjustment should put the right tension on the T-belt.
What kind of a noise are you hearing? Is it a belt squeal, like 97RedTegGSR mentioned? Or is it a metallic noise, a ticking? Or tapping? Are you SURE the noise wasn't there before you did the T-belt/pump?
If so, is it possible that the T-belt is off by a tooth somewhere? After you install the belt and and set the tension, and you make sure the cam and crank marks are all lined up, you should rotate the crank 720° and check all the marks again. Then, another 720° and check AGAIN. That will have sent the cam goodies around twice, at the proper belt tension, and if everything's still lined up, it's all set. But sometimes you'll see something "off a bit" after the second time around -- and that means the belt has to be se-set and re-checked before putting the covers and crank pulley back on.
Just a thought.
