Pointless Landmark!
Yup.
10,000 posts.
Basically means nothing, except....
I will be locking and cleaning up the Picture thread.
Going to get rid of dead image links and chatter posts. Then, I'll unlock it again for all to enjoy.
PS. Anything you guys can think of for additions to the forum (Keep them Tech. related as this is a Tech. board) for this week, let me know. I'll start going through the submissions tomorrow, and pick out ones that will yield the best results for the time consumption necessary to complete them.

I got yelled at for trying to invoke that rule, so I just keep the thread tidy over the course of a small time period. It's hard to keep up with all that I have put into place, and that's why the Picture thread got behind schedule. I've come to a point where I can get back in there and vacuum a little bit, so it'll be more effective as a picture thread. I still will allow common chat in there, simply so people don't explode trying to throw opinions out there and me just zapping them on sight (as I know a lot of people hate that rule, but seem to miss how many times that they can throw opinions out there without consequence).

I hate to go against you bud, but this is my .02.
If we allowed opinions then maybe something constructive would come out of it? I havent been here that long. But if people could CUT DOWN on the flaming then i think that this forum would be a very nice one.
I had this all said in my head and when it came to words then it all just went to crap. haha.

So i'm guessing somebody was a tool and made a derigitory post towards Matt and then deleted it...?

No, it wasn't derogatory, but I'm glad to see your can assume things. My post was deleted by the moderator, which was recommended in my post. We took it to PM so don't worry your little head about it.

Alright, since no one seems to want to offer up ideas, how about this one?
Step 1. Abolish the "Opinion thread" rule.
Step 2. Invoke a "Flaming rule" with harsh punishment? (ex. 1 allowed flame for warning, then point reduction from then on?)

I think sometimes a small extent of flaming is appropriate when things can be found easily using the search. There's no excuse for that and I may have been wrong when I defended a specific opinion thread. However, there may be some (many?) opinions that are worthwhile and it would be nice to have the opportunity to hear them.
What I'm trying to say is maybe stipulate in the forum rules that opinion threads should be introduced with caution and will be closely monitored for constructive input. If it's starts going south then it will be locked immediately. Excessive flaming may warrant point reductions at the moderators discretion.

since i'm at work i don't got too much time to think about this but probably tonight.
I do like the step 1 and step 2 i think is cool but how about this.
Allow the flamming but once the thread starts getting out of control which ever individuals involved will get point reduction.

As much as I can see your point of view, you need not look far for comparison between the rules I hold here and the way other moderators set rules for their forums. I'm no more stringent than they are.
And, furthermore, promoting "flaming" won't really solve any problems. It'll just create aggravation between the new user and whomever is doing the "flaming". How does that even relate to the point of this forum. Simply put, this is a TECH forum, for people looking for tech-related answers. How does bashing someone even come into play?
I'm sorry, but unless you have something actually useful to put toward this discussion, there's really no need for me to keep explaining the reasons why opinion threads help no one.
If you guys are just going to keep complaining until I go through the entire FAQ's and update them until I become insane, then fine I'll just go that route. I'll make sure every common question is answered to the brink of stupidity, and you guys (the ones that are complaining, anyways) won't be able to bark at me. Because, even your complaints will have a FAQ/DIY/INFO written about them.
I'm starting to see just how useless some people are at providing even the simplest of answers/requests. How incredibly un-successful this thread was, is simply staggering.

Look man, I never said you should change your policy. My post is actually supporting your ban on opinion threads and I thought we had a decent conversation over pm. No one is complaining, you asked for ideas.
I think you are acting overly dramatic. No one wants you personally to make some end-all FAQ. The whole idea is that we do things as a community to help each other out. Sometimes FAQs aren't perfectly clear and sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a little interaction. We are, afterall, here to talk about cars, right?
I hope its not me that got you all riled up. If you prefer, I will refrain from posting in your forum. Otherwise, please relax; I/we am/are just trying to help. Unfortunately everyone has an opinion and they rarely agree.

Well it would be natural to assume such a thing, as Curiouz_G's post suggests that somebody said something negative.
And the last thing i'm doing is "worrying my little head about it", but nice attempt at a patronising post nontheless.

I was thinking an actual landmark, like we have direction books at work and they tell you to turn at banks or gas stations, like they have the same name they did a week ago. They change names more than some folks change their underwear. But wow 10,000 how often are you on HT? or the easier answer might be how often are you not on HT?

You suggested that "flaming" should be allowed to a certain extent. I was simply pointing out, that "flaming" is against the Terms of Service, and thus negates your suggestion.

I'd say I'm on H-T about 3-6 hours a day, because my job is pathetically boring (I'm only at this job for the "experience" portion of my resume, and I'll probably be a ghost on H-T when I leave this company). And, unfortunately, a large amount of posts I make are regarding the Search feature or locking descriptions.
