the car died while he was driving.... we replaced the ecu with a known working one and also a new dizzy. would the main relay make it not spark??

yeah, go cheep first, and replace that main relay to see what happenes
if not, check grounds, if its not a good ground. your valve cover.
and check if theres any loose connections on your ecu

The relay, could have a bad connection. check fuses.
here is a good way to check for spark. be careful.
take the spark plug out of cylineder 1. and put the plug wire on the spark plug.
and hold the wire with your hands, and rest the threds of the plug on the the edge of the valve cover. and have someone try to start the car, and if it is, throughing sparks. you will be able to clearly see them.

It could be a bounch of different things that could make the car not run. Do a search and you will be suprised at how much info. can be found.

Things to check:
Ignition switch
Timing Belt
Main relay (Controls main ignition and fuel pump)

Among other things. You need to provide more info if you want a better answer.
