Default some engine advice

Ok my car was in the shop for a headgasket kit replacement and when it finally got out my mechanic told me that the problem wasnt fixed due to a bad piston or the ring or something. He actually showed me the loosness in the piston. well he never said anything about it that I could be taken a chance by finishing the job. So now my car isnt fixed and I got 550.00 into it without labor. 250 for a shaved head and around 300.00 for parts (genuine). Now he suggest to put a new motor in it or used at that matter and he found one but I have to trade my engine and give 300.00 to this other guy to get it. He also said I could swap everything including the transmission. Any recomendations please

.... err....

1) what car do you have
2) are you going to upgrade your motor when you swap it or swap it for same one?

thanks for the reply. He has a d15 and mines a d16. He said it would be less power and that the d15 would fit my tranny. I could get the other tranny with the d15 but I guess if it aint broke I dont want it fixed anyway. My car is 1989 crx si with a d16a6 in it. I would like to go bigger but the funds arent there so I need to get that bad boy on the rode my brother. Ps what does bump mean. I see that alot on here.

damn, man sorry to say but get a new mechanic. He is ripping you off.
a complete d16a6 swap is probably 300 with Tranny or less.
A SOHC ZC motor is 400 and DOHC is 500

do some research or just go to the Faqs and read up then drop in a new motor urself.

yeah it stinks because he already has my old engine pulled and I feel stuck. I dont want to make him mad and he ends up doing a granny job. Any suggestions on how I should approach it with out getting in a huge argument with the guy.

PAY HIM WHAT YOU OWE...

CALL A TOW TRUCK, BRING THE CAR HOME. RESEARCH A MOTOR REPLACEMENT LIKE A SOHC ZC FROM HMOTORS AND BE DONE WITH IT.

YOU LIVE AND LEARN.

thats very good advice brother but I dont have a garage and proper tools like engine hoist and stuff to fix it myself. Im sure any other mechanic is gonna charge me a killing to put the thing in. friggin stinks man. what is a fair price for putting in an engine. Of course I would love to do it myself but ya know

yeah it is my only ride since my motorcycle decided to break down to. So I kinda have to eat it some I guess. Like streetwerks said you live and learn I guess. But being on this forum has made me a smarter grasshopper. Although I do wish I had another car cause that would be the way to go crx30436.

Have you ever seen piston clearances on a Domestic Car ?????

you can run with quite a gap around your pistons for at least 20-30K miles

or just bore your cylinders out .5mm over and get a lil bigger pistons

prolly a lil more spendy that way but its another option

i have seen cars run just fine with a .014-.020 in. gap although its better to be a bit tighter of course but you can run it that way til you get money for a better block and just be nice to it and dont race on it too much

I agree. Have that ******* put it back together with what you have had done.

Then.....when you can.....source a ZC sohc engine.....swap heads, and put it back together.

We here online, and you and a friend can do that in a weekend without an engine hoist.

Do it from the bottom.

Any questions, feel free to PM me, and I will help you as much as I can.

that sounds like a plan. Ive been calling him and he hasnt answered my call so I think I will just ride out there on my friends bike. Also since Ive been getting this info Ive been looking for an engine. They seem to be real expensive. I looked on honda motors and got kinda confused with all the numbers. Also (EF9SIRJEFF) I asked him about that and he said it would be about 500.00 to do that.IDK. Thanks SIRED91

you know what. This is what I would do. Look in the Marketplace for a SOHC replacement or do a little research what kind of engine you want to replace into it. Make a post for someone local that can help you swap it in.I've seen SOHC for 300.. full swap

Your original post in this thread sucked and seamed to kinda float around with out actually explaining wht your car was in for service for. Why was your car originally brought to the shop? Was the headgasket known to be blown? was the compression bad? die in traffic? gradual problem? smoking? Lets start there.

I thought I did explain it enough. Well anyway I talked it over with my mechanic and everything worked out for that other engine the way I wanted. The car is now in my possession and again I really apprediate your help on this topic. Its helped me understand some things and better communicate with my mechanic.
