Default is it necessary to separate the transmission to drop the oil pan?

Looking underneath my Type R engine, it looks like the right side of the oil pan is tucked inside the transmission bell housing, with the bolts necessary to drop the pan on that side out of view. I would like to run the Mugen baffled oil pan, is it necessary to separate the tranny to get access to the stock pan?

Nope, just remove the engine block stiffener, I think its held on by 5-6 bolts. You have to take off the exhaust manifold too.

That reminds me I need to put mine back on!

^ed's correct. you don't have to.

just have to remove one stiffener, i believe. i had to do this to my daily gsr and i had 2 i had to remove... but after i got the header off and the stiffeners off... which were all just a PITA to get off, and unbolted the nuts/bolts to the pan, it just popped right off. GL.

a sad day for me.

Until about 3 months ago (when I first bought my '00 Si) I didn't even know that these engines had a stiffener to the tranny. I've owned, and gone through too many to count B swaps..... and none have had the stiffener. (Even my R's is missing)

So, I gotta ask, how important is it? Why would they have all been taken off? And are there limits to when they can be used? example- I thought I heard that a B18c with a Civic tranny would not allow the stiffener... yet, my stock '00 Si has one.?

yep

you can use the gsr cover if you have a header that will not clear the itr brace

I suppose that explains why mine is missing on my R. (the Hytech header doesn't clear it I guess?)

but it doesn't explain why every other B-series car I've owned, or swap I've purchased had it missing.

Now I'm mad at all the people who sold me messed up stuff! Bastards!

Learn to read. Only ITR's came with it. Not every B series has the heavey duty tranny brace.

i'm not sure what you're referring to...or who, but if you're talking about stiffeners, not only ITRs had them. (maybe we're just on different pages )like i said, i had TWO i had to remove on my daily GSR last night and one was particulary a PITA so i remember quite clearly.

Correction, you had covers, not braces/stiffeners. The GSR/LS covers are just a thin piece of metal to cover and protect the flywheel. ITR's came with big *** chunks of metal to act as a stiffener/brace

are you sure you know what the itr brace looks like it a huge aluminum brace its not the two legs every other b series has that connects the block to transmission.

what Kavehman said is true. i remember reading the technical aspects of the ITR right down to the engine, and it said the ITR had a block stiffener. although i had no idea what to look for, the diagram just pointed to a spot next to the oil dipstick.

not to thread jack, this brings me to a quick question i have. where IS the block stiffener? part #10?? when i could not make out where it was, i just assumed it was sorta integrated with the block.

my GSR had part numbers 10 and/or 11 (forget if i had them both or just one.. thinking both) from the pic above. those are not covers. they are braces/stiffeners/what ever you want to call them. also: yes. it did have a black sheetmetal cover.
