I have a 1993 honda civic dx with an sohc vtec in it.The original engine from the car was a 1.5 sohc 16 valve non vtec,so the car doesn't have the wires that go to the vtec solenoid.From what I understand the green/yellow wire at the top of the solenoid is the wire that triggers the solenoid when 12 volts is applied to it and the black and the blue/black wires are for the op switch at the bottom of the solenoid.

So what I wanted to know is what does the op switch have to do with the vtec?

the wires green and black i believe are for the ecu and ground, the green plug is a oil pressure sensor i believe, if you are running the "vtec" switch thats just dumb, your not seeing the actual advantage of it unless you get the right ecu and do it the right way.

 

But what does the oil pressure switch have to do with the vtec?Im guessing that it senses when theres enough oil pressure to be able to push the rods into the rocker arms so that the valves open more but im not sure.I got that idea from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q24D0xv49d4 .Also If you hook up a switch to trigger the vtec ability whenever the button is pressed then as long as you press it at the right rpms then it should be as effective as if an ecu was doing it right?

 

Why not just wire VTEC correctly into your car?

Run the wires from The Pressure switch and Solenoid to the Pins on the ECU. To wire a switch or button for VTEC is just crazy.

You could Send your ECU to get chipped for VTEC.
Or buy a SOHC VTEC Ecu.
You really should have the correct ECU either way.

 

Hm.....well I think I'll go get a sohc vtec ecu.But I need to know what to look for.I dont know if my engine is a d16 or whatever(if you can tell me what it is that would be great) all I know is it's an sohc vtec(just the normal vtec) and when I bought it they said it would fit 92-95 civics and it works great in my 93 civic dx 4 door,I just had to put the intake from my old engine on the vtec engine.So if you can tell me what the sticker on the sohc vtec says then I can get it.

 

Youre Engine code will be stamped on the front of your motor, Its a small flat square.
That will tell you what motor you have.

More than likely you can start looking for a P28 ECU.
Which is an SOHC VTEC Ecu

 

It says D15B.So I need to look for a vtec ecu that has p28 stamped on the sticker?After I get the ecu will my wireharness work on it or do I need a vtec wire harness?

 

The wire harness in your car is perfectly fine.
What youre gonna have to do is wire the VTEC pressure switch. And the VTEC solenoid seperatly to the ECU.

The Plugs that go into the ECU already have the spots for the Pressure switch and Solenoid.
So all you have to do is run the wires to the ECU
And then Ground the Pressure switch.

Heres how to De pin an ECU plug.
BTW. You can get the extra Pins for the ECU at a junk yard or probably radio shack.

Theyre very comman and easy to come by.
Less than a $100.

I need a p08 ecu..

 

The only problem with a JDM ECU is it wont pass Inspection in the United states.

It also looks like that is an Automatic transmission ECU.

And to boot a 140 dollars is alot.

 

Whats the difference between the jdm ecu and the one that will pass inspection in the usa?Ok so p28 is what I need then....Are all p28 ECUs for manual transmissions or is that something else I gotta look for on the ecu sticker?

 

JDM ECU's have slightly more aggressive ignition timing and fuel maps too. Being that theyre
slightly higher compression.

I know the JDM have a slightly lower speed Limiter.
But who cares.

There is Automatic and 5 speed P28 ECU's

92-5 ECUs (P28, P30, P61, P72, P91, P08)

5spd = 000, 001, 002, 003, A00, A01, A02, C00, C01, C02, J00, J01, J02, G00, G01

Auto = J50, J51, 901, 902, C50, C51, C52, A50, A51, A52, L50, L51, G51

All those numbers/letters dispher between AUTO and 5speed ECU's
Those numbers are shown right after P28 on the ECU sticker.

All in all.

Find a 5 speed p28 ECU.
Get the plugs for the pressure switch and solenoid. And pins for ECU plugs.
Run the wires to the PIN outs on the digram i posted above and you should be straight.
