Default cable tranny customizing?

Hey all, I am looking for a compromize between long haul driving and acceleration for my cable tranny. I have a jdm s1 (short *** gears) and a usdm ls (long *** gears) I know about the ls 5th gear swap to the long ls 5th gear, but I don't want the issues associated with this (namely premature synchro and gear wear that I have heard about) SO, anyone have any other fixes for this, other than coughing up for a jdm ys1

yeah im a noob here

5th gear swap is probably your best bet.

and BTW the YS1 gears are even shorter
YS1 or Y1 that had a 4.266 final drive, and the S1 or J1 that had a 4.400 final drive.

personaly I wouldnt mess with my short gears. I love them!

Why not just swap in a 4.266 FD?

Yeah, I love the short gears but driving 8 hours gets pretty tiring at like 110k on a freeway.... i thought of the 4.2 final, but wouldn't it make it even shorter? can you swap a 4.6 from a hydro tranny? The only prob with this is cost and parts sourcing
thanks for all the input! Pretty soon My car is going under the knife for a body restoration, minor bay prep, etc. so you'll probably see it in a month or so.

A 4.266 would make each gear taller; but with gear spacing the same. A numerically higher FD would make the transmission even shorter.

you'd have to disassemble both main and countershafts, swap the shift forks and gears for that to work. s1 gearing with 4.26 FD is a waste of time IMO.

a better option would be a cable ys1 with 94+ gsr gears installed.

Anybody have the 4.2 installed? would it make that much difference.... I am thinking of just staying short geared and deal with it for all the hassle involved! It will be a summer only car soon, so I want it to be a fun driver.

eda6, you have a sik sig!

Yeah, thats the easiest, but I have heard about bad synchro and gear wear from the huge gap between 4th and 5th. Lets hear some peoples personal experience on this:

-how long have you been running the setup?
-any problems with wear, etc.?
-what kind of driving your doing ie. street, roadrace etc.?

I already have the jdm tranny opened up to see what shape its in, the swap seems pretty easy....

x2, you will get the perfect cable tranny with strong hydro internals.

coll, cool, sounds good. I'll keep my an eye on classifieds for a gsr tranny. do you just use the full main and counter assembly, or basically everything inside?

thanks for the input guys!
