what would cause this piston and head damage ? no valves look bent?
i took a friends car apart that someone tried to get running at one time.. it was sputtering and idles poor .. so i pullled the head off. there is tiny dents and dings all over 2 cylinders and 2 of the cyl on the head.. the valves dont look bent though . they dont even look like they touched at all.. but what could cause this? there was nothing in the cyl when i took apart?

It is pretty hard to tell because those photos are so crappy, but if there are dents and dings, it could be that some time in the past the engine digested a valve, and the previous owner never really fixed the damage..
either way, its probably damage from some foreign object getting sucked in.. like a rock because you weren't running an air filter or something.. who knows..

It defs looks like foreign material, maybe the little screws that hold the butterfly on in the IM, seen it before but alot worse.
