Better than what? Not getting your engine cleaned up... I'll take a guess and say Yes it would be better???

What do you mean by cleaned? Are you talking about an engine rebuild or just cleaning it????
How many miles on the engine?
Is it running poorly, eating oil or smoking?
Is it in or out of the car?
What are your plans for the engine?

Yes you should take it to a machine shop and have the block and head cleaned & checked. As well as getting the block and head matting surfaces finished. Not plained, just a touch-up finish. To ensure that the surfaces are within the 30-60 roughness average. Get your cylinders honed and if you have the cash get your crank polished while it's out of the block. It won't hurt that's for sure. Just make sure you measure everything when you get it back. You could have the engine blueprinted if you have the money Good luck with your rebuild.

Prices will probably vary depending on the shop. Try calling a few shops in your local area to get quotes and references before you go ahead with your machine work. The price is a phone call away probably faster than waiting for a quote on here!
